Her bags on slung over the arms of It girls everywhere.  She is Rebecca Minkoff.  Born in San Diego, Minkoff first hit the fashion scene in 2001 with an apparel line.  It wasn’t until good friend Jenna Elfman was spotted with one of her bags (Morning After Bag, or MAB), that the line took off.  The bags are renowned for their versatility and style.  See them below on a Gossip Gal and City Gal and then shop eModa.com to get your own!

The Fashionable Costume

Ah, yes, Halloween.  The one day a year when seemingly sweet and innocent girls give way to their inner wild child and morph into skanky fairy tale princesses (Little Red Riding Ho, Sinderella, etc.), naughty cops and medieval wenches.  This year, I’m helping you embrace your innermost desires with three last minute “fashionable” costumes. As you make your choices, consider this: I will be asking my readers to submit a photo of their fashion inspired costumes for judging.  The top 5 costumes will receive an eModa coupon code for 25% off and have their photo posted on my blog for the entire world to see.

Lindsay Lohan

She’s been in more leggings than movies. So many, in fact, she has her own line!  To achieve the perfect Lindsay, pair black leggings with boots and an oversized tee.  A vest or leather riding jacket is also appropriate.  You’ll need another long blonde wig (preferably one that can be curled to achieve Lindsay’s wavy spirals), a can of Redbull, a pack of cigarettes, an oversized bag and a scowl to complete this look.  (A spray tan is also a nice touch.)

*Extra points if you manage to snuggle up to a female DJ at some point during the holiday.

Beyonce

Beyonce is the very definition of diva.  As such, confidence is crucial with this costume.  Hair must be long, luscious, cascading curls; the bigger the better.  If you’re daring, go for a sparkly leotard (long sleeves) with shimmering, neutral toned tights. If you’re not so daring, try a mini-dress.  You can do a simple pump or something fierce and big hoops with either look.  The robot claw makes the costume, so if you don’t happen to have an extra one lying around, find a long, black glove (wrist length, satin) and embellish it with shells, beads, sequins and spray paint (nail polish will also work on a smaller area).  The goal is to make it look like her video claw, so aim for chunky and mechanical looking (think armadillo).  Don’t be afraid to go overboard with the makeup; liner and shimmer shadow with extravagant lashes will work well.  An all-over shimmer lotion is great for the face, neck and chest.

*Extra points if you can command a crowd to join you in a rendition of Single Ladies.

Lady Gaga

I anticipate a great many Lady Gaga’s this Halloween, but if you’ve got imagination to spare, there’s no reason why yours can’t be unique.  Lady Gaga is nothing without her high-cut leotard.  Pair it with bright colored tights (or colored fish-nets) and thigh-high leather boots.  If you can pull it off, her signature hair bow is the way to go.  If you’re dexterously challenged in the hair department, opt instead for a blonde bob with severe angles (think Anna Wintour) or another long poker straight (pun intended) wig.  For the crafty costumer, spray lace doilies, attach an elastic band and cut eye holes to create a mask.  Locate a top hat and go to town with lace, feathers, sequins and glitter (playing cards are a nice kitschy touch).  The mask and hat are where you have the most creative freedom, so ask yourself while crafting, “What would Lady Gaga do (WWLGD)?”  Elbow length gloves and big, dark sunglasses and a Disco Stick (you’re on your own with that one) complete the look.

*Extra points if you can snag Alexander Skarsgard as your escort.

Halloween is first and foremost a celebratory time of fun and fantasy, but safety should always be considered.  Party in groups, don’t leave your drinks unattended and always, always designate a safe driver.

Happy Halloween, my ghouls and Gaga’s; I look forward to seeing your “fashionable” costumes!

(To be considered for judging, all pictures must be received at lel@emoda.com by Friday, November 6, 2009.  Please be sure to tell me who you dressed up as, your name and your location.  Winners will be notified by email.)

Solecollector.com Interview With Kris Wright from Jhung Yuro

Nick DePaula: Can you walk me through the design lines of the First Class?
Kris Wright: The JY First Class is a clean but rich built shoe. When we first began discussing the concept and direction for this model we decided that this shoe needed to be clean and understandable, however very rich and detailed. The shoe is all about clean lines and multiple materials to highlight the clean aesthetic of the shoe. From the angular top line, to the toe cap and to the quarter panel overlay we designed and built this shoe with a lot of attention to detailing.

The shoe has a taller cut than most JY silhouettes, is that a trait we can look forward to in following seasons?
Yes, this shoe is definitely higher than any of the shoes we have done in the past, except for the new boot we are launching next month. While we have another shoe launching in Spring 2010 that’s called the Jhung Yuro Breathe and is also a true high top, I wouldn’t go as far to say that this is our new direction by any means. We have always taken the approach and strategy of designing footwear that we believe falls in line with our personal style for that season or year. To answer your question, yes, we have a great new Hi top coming in Spring and everybody was very happy with how the JY Breathe was received this past Magic show.

Was there anything you changed along the way with the model?
Quite honestly it’s rare that factories nail a shoe the first time out during the development process, but in the case of the First Class, the factory nailed the shoe spot on from a design point of view. We did not have to make any design changes along the way, but we did make some minor color changes once we began selling the shoe in.

What upper materials for this season are you most excited about? The texture and quality that you guys are able to offer isn’t seen too often at that price point.
I’m really excited about the perforated full grain leather and the subtle patent leather detailing we are using on the First Class. Both are very rich and exude value for the end consumer. I am also always proud of the recurring pig skin collar and sock lining that we use on all Jhung Yuro shoes. It’s very rare that you see the kinds of material stories we offer in our product at the prices we retail our shoes at.

What colorway of the First Class have you been rocking most?
I have been rocking my all grey First Class Hi’s. The shoe is now colored Grey/Red but it was originally all grey and was super clean and subtle. We had a war at the office over the addition of adding the hit of red to the shoe. At the end of the day, that particular color is dope either way and I have gotten some good mileage out of the original color up and now I’m about to transition into the Grey/Red version!!

The Old School and First Class are both pretty unique and yet on the same tooling, what were you hoping to do differently with each?
When designing new uppers while using the same tooling, the goal is always to make sure each new model is a far departure from the original model it follows. In the case of the Old School 2, the strapping and lacing system combo is the stand alone detail that clearly defines that model. With the First Class, the toe cap and vamp are the defining pieces that define this model.

What stores can you find Jhung Yuro in and what accounts or markets are you looking to expand into?
We are currently being sold in over 100 independent retailers around the USA, including Up Against the Wall and Jimmy Jazz. We are in the process of ramping up our business with two additional multi-door independent specialty retailers, while staying mindful of taking our time and growing the business in a safe and healthy manner.

G-Star Spring 2010 Runway Review

New York fashion week just past and one of our brands, G-Star, put on another great show at the same location as last year the Hammerstein Ballroom. The buyers from eModa went to the show and had the first view for Spring Summer 2010. Take a look at the pictures and reviews of the G-Star show.

“As always, G-Star is experimenting with the ways in which denim can be worn. A long white tuxedo jumpsuit with revealing slits cut up each side had a trompe l’oeil bolero in the brand’s signature fabric attached at the shoulders. Teeny-tiny denim bikini shorts would probably do best under a skirt (although they might offer Lady Gaga something to do her grocery shopping in). On the more pragmatic side, a fitted and flared blazer in a classic dark wash looked just right for right now. ” - Style.com

“Before we get into the fashion details, let’s set the record straight: G-Star Raw knows how to put on a fashion show. G-Star turned the Hammerstein Ballroon into a tubular vessel of white light and blaring bass. The collection, although ridden with some clever jumpsuits, jackets and drop-crotch jeans, reminded me of a typical, vintage teacup. Royal blue and white patterns dominated the runway, looking far more docile and innocent than past collections. But G-Star’s industrial aesthetic radiated via their expertise in raw denim, more specifically in a denim patchwork trench and several canvas and buckle vests.” - Fashionindie.com

Save the Date: August 28th, 2009

With unprecedented access, The September Issue, directed and produced by R.J. Cutler, tells the story of legendary Vogue editor in chief Anna Wintour and her larger-than-life team of editors creating the issue and ruling the world of fashion.

The September Issue won the Grand Jury Prize for Excellence in Cinematography at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival and will make its theatrical debut on August 28th, 2009

The September 2007 issue of Vogue magazine weighed nearly five pounds, and was the single largest issue of a magazine ever published. With ad sales now dropping at a record rate, is this the begining of Anna Wintours grand exit strategy?

Serena French, an NY Post fashion editor reports; Wintour, allowed Cutler an extraordinary level of access for the closing of the most important issue of the year in 2007, which at 840 pages was the magazine’s biggest ever. Cutler followed Wintour and her team from the shows in February — when fall clothes are shown on world stages — from planning with editors and photographers, fashion shoots, meetings with retailers and designers, to closing in July, interspersed with interviews at her homes in Greenwich Village and Long Island.

If this really is the end, or only just the begining, Anna Wintour will forever be regarded by the Fashion industry as nothing sort of a Legacy.

September Fashion Bibles are Being Reduced to Magazines

For September, every major fashion magazine releases an Issue thick enough to be a Steven King Novel, but, that may be so last year. This years coveted September issue is expected to appear as skinny as the model on the cover.

In an attempt to save recession dollars, fashion marketers are turning to the web for a hopefully better place to spend their advertising budget. Already in effect, some September issues are showing up on the news stands, about a third slimmer than last year.

Ad pages in Vogue tumbled 36%, to 429. That’s a far cry from 2007, when Vogue trumpeted its September issue with a total of 840 pages.

As they spend less on magazine advertising, fashion marketers are testing lower cost and possibly more measurable outlets offered on the web. Included are YouTube, Twitter, DailyCandy.com and more to come. Re-allocating money to buy add space and on top web magazines may be money better spent now the people spend more time reading on the computer than out of magazine and newspapers.

Many designers resisted Internet marketing in the past, with the excuse that they could not properly display their product or message and that they would not be able to reach their real target audience. But with the times’a'changin technology can showcase almost anything on the computer as though you were looking at the real thing. We have Large High def screens on our desks that can watch beautiful video in real time.

WPP’s ad tracking firm TNS Media Intelligence reported that Louis Vuitton North America more than doubled its digital ad spending in 2008 to $286,000, from $107,000 in 2007, and Diane von Furstenberg boosted its Web spending from nothing to $43,000 last year. This data tracks spending on display ads but does not account for other types of digital ads, such as search and online video or the cost of creating a Web site.

Being online is now considered and investment, entire marketing campaigns are being launched digitally. Chanel used social media by posting a short film to YouTube, starring French actress Audrey Tautou, and promoted the video with search ads and other ads on the site.

To capture some of the dollars flowing to the Web, traditional magazine companies are introducing new features. The e-commerce initiative launching on Condé Nast’s Style.com in September lets users shop for trends they see on the runway. Net-A-Porter, Nine West, Neiman Marcus and New York & Co. all are advertising on the site at launch.

Can Katie Holmes Dress Us As Cute As Suri?

Believe it or not the the actress turned dancer is now turning fashion designer.

Teamed with her personal stylist Jeanne Yang, their new women’s wear will mimic Holmes’ own classic sense of style while an additional childrens line will be modeled after her super stylish daughter Suri.

Due to debut in the fall,  Holmes and Yangs’ new line with be sold exclusively at high-end boutique Maxfield in Los Angeles, reports WWD.

Katie holmes may be prvoing herself as more than a tripple threat. She can sing dance and act…tv, movies and boradway. She ran the new York City Marathon, appears on “So You Think You Can Dance” and dresses the cutest celebrity baby ever! Is there anything she can’t do?

Here is an example of one of duo’s previous collaborations that Katie wore last year to the Broadway permiere of “All My Sons.”
