Solecollector.com Interview With Kris Wright from Jhung Yuro

Tuesday, October 27th, 2009

Nick DePaula: Can you walk me through the design lines of the First Class?
Kris Wright: The JY First Class is a clean but rich built shoe. When we first began discussing the concept and direction for this model we decided that this shoe needed to be clean and understandable, however very rich and detailed. The shoe is all about clean lines and multiple materials to highlight the clean aesthetic of the shoe. From the angular top line, to the toe cap and to the quarter panel overlay we designed and built this shoe with a lot of attention to detailing.

The shoe has a taller cut than most JY silhouettes, is that a trait we can look forward to in following seasons?
Yes, this shoe is definitely higher than any of the shoes we have done in the past, except for the new boot we are launching next month. While we have another shoe launching in Spring 2010 that’s called the Jhung Yuro Breathe and is also a true high top, I wouldn’t go as far to say that this is our new direction by any means. We have always taken the approach and strategy of designing footwear that we believe falls in line with our personal style for that season or year. To answer your question, yes, we have a great new Hi top coming in Spring and everybody was very happy with how the JY Breathe was received this past Magic show.

Was there anything you changed along the way with the model?
Quite honestly it’s rare that factories nail a shoe the first time out during the development process, but in the case of the First Class, the factory nailed the shoe spot on from a design point of view. We did not have to make any design changes along the way, but we did make some minor color changes once we began selling the shoe in.

What upper materials for this season are you most excited about? The texture and quality that you guys are able to offer isn’t seen too often at that price point.
I’m really excited about the perforated full grain leather and the subtle patent leather detailing we are using on the First Class. Both are very rich and exude value for the end consumer. I am also always proud of the recurring pig skin collar and sock lining that we use on all Jhung Yuro shoes. It’s very rare that you see the kinds of material stories we offer in our product at the prices we retail our shoes at.

What colorway of the First Class have you been rocking most?
I have been rocking my all grey First Class Hi’s. The shoe is now colored Grey/Red but it was originally all grey and was super clean and subtle. We had a war at the office over the addition of adding the hit of red to the shoe. At the end of the day, that particular color is dope either way and I have gotten some good mileage out of the original color up and now I’m about to transition into the Grey/Red version!!

The Old School and First Class are both pretty unique and yet on the same tooling, what were you hoping to do differently with each?
When designing new uppers while using the same tooling, the goal is always to make sure each new model is a far departure from the original model it follows. In the case of the Old School 2, the strapping and lacing system combo is the stand alone detail that clearly defines that model. With the First Class, the toe cap and vamp are the defining pieces that define this model.

What stores can you find Jhung Yuro in and what accounts or markets are you looking to expand into?
We are currently being sold in over 100 independent retailers around the USA, including Up Against the Wall and Jimmy Jazz. We are in the process of ramping up our business with two additional multi-door independent specialty retailers, while staying mindful of taking our time and growing the business in a safe and healthy manner.

G-Star Spring 2010 Runway Review

Thursday, September 17th, 2009

New York fashion week just past and one of our brands, G-Star, put on another great show at the same location as last year the Hammerstein Ballroom. The buyers from eModa went to the show and had the first view for Spring Summer 2010. Take a look at the pictures and reviews of the G-Star show.

“As always, G-Star is experimenting with the ways in which denim can be worn. A long white tuxedo jumpsuit with revealing slits cut up each side had a trompe l’oeil bolero in the brand’s signature fabric attached at the shoulders. Teeny-tiny denim bikini shorts would probably do best under a skirt (although they might offer Lady Gaga something to do her grocery shopping in). On the more pragmatic side, a fitted and flared blazer in a classic dark wash looked just right for right now. ” - Style.com

“Before we get into the fashion details, let’s set the record straight: G-Star Raw knows how to put on a fashion show. G-Star turned the Hammerstein Ballroon into a tubular vessel of white light and blaring bass. The collection, although ridden with some clever jumpsuits, jackets and drop-crotch jeans, reminded me of a typical, vintage teacup. Royal blue and white patterns dominated the runway, looking far more docile and innocent than past collections. But G-Star’s industrial aesthetic radiated via their expertise in raw denim, more specifically in a denim patchwork trench and several canvas and buckle vests.” - Fashionindie.com

PHILADELPHIA, PA – Premier fashion resource, eModa, recently launched a trendy online lifestyle magazine on April 1, 2009. The new publication, which features a variety of topics related to men and women’s designer clothing, is available for free at eModa.com.

Catering to readers between ages 15 and 45 who have an interest in fashion, current events, sports and celebrities, eModa Magazine is an online escape for those looking to break away from the daily grind. “At eModa, we’re all about fashion, and the launch of eModa Magazine was a natural transition for us. Now we can supplement our retailer site with the editorial features on current news and trends in women and men’s designer clothing. Plus, our exclusive interviews and features give readers the inside scoop on the hottest celebrity news stories and current events,” says Michelle Miller of eModa (http://www.emoda.com).

For the cover story of its inaugural issue, eModa Magazine’s Michelle Miller conducted an exclusive interview and photo shoot with popular NHL playboy, Scottie Upshaw. Five Four, eModa.com Mentioned in *The Wall Street Journal*

Friday, February 13th, 2009

Back in September, menswear label Five Four sold out of a new $325 peacoat in one week. Buoyed by strong orders from retailers, including Macy’s, designer Andres Izquieta ordered luxurious fabrics from an Italian mill.

“I was thinking we were going to have a new category of $300 to $500 coats for fall 2009,” says Mr. Izquieta, 28 years old. His co-chief executive, Dee Murthy, also 28, was confident, too; indeed, he had splurged on a new Aston Martin Vantage sports car for himself in March.

Alas, when world markets crashed the following month, consumers snapped their wallets shut. Many of the retailers that sold Five Four’s trendy, casual jackets, shirts and other heavily detailed pieces canceled orders or backed out of payments.

Suddenly, Five Four found itself in free fall. “I feel like I woke up the first week of October, when everything stopped,” Mr. Murthy says. The founders of the Los Angeles-based company would have to act quickly.

Izquieta and MurthyIn the aftermath of last fall’s credit crunch, the future is unclear. But as businesses like Five Four traverse the new terrain, they are creating long-lasting changes that will affect all consumers — from where clothes are produced to their price and quality.

Marketing guru Paco Underhill predicts that the business world “will change more in the next five years than it has in the past 100.” The process isn’t purely destructive. “Each time something is gone, it frees up room,” Mr. Underhill says. Five Four’s scramble — ranging from its rethinking of supplier and vendor relationships to an expansion into socks, rather than $500 coats — show the evolution under way.

Knowing that only the agile would survive, Mr. Murthy and Mr. Izquieta worked quickly last fall to save their seven-year-old company. The line of $500 coats was out. They decided the new price had to be below $200.

At six o’clock one evening, Mr. Izquieta emailed the Italian mill operator to cancel the $17-a-yard fabric order. The mill operator immediately dropped his price to $7.50 a yard. “I could tell from his tone that he was under water,” the designer recalls. The Italian textile industry is known for high quality and better factory working conditions, but numerous designers are fleeing its high prices.

Mr. Izquieta, too, had to put cost-cutting first. He located a mill in India that would produce a worthy fabric for $2 a yard, reducing the retail price of the coat to $185.

Meanwhile, lenders were shutting off credit to Five Four’s vendors and many of the 1,000 stores that sell its clothes. For November, it had orders worth $1.2 million — but only about $100,000 came from retailers with sufficient credit. “We had to figure out ways to ship these customers their winter orders,” Mr. Murthy says.

He called retailers, saying, “This is a vicious cycle. If you can’t pass credit, I can’t sell you these goods, and if I can’t ship you the goods, I can’t stay in business.” The solution: Five Four shipped on faith — accepting post-dated checks, personal credit-card payments, and even verbal IOUs. “They offered any terms we wanted,” says Dan Kogan, chief executive of Emoda, a retailer with stores in Philadelphia, Atlanta and online.

When one over-embellished shirt style sold poorly at Atrium, a store in New York, Five Four took it back and sent other shirts. “Their price was significantly lower than most of their competitors, given the quality of the goods,” says Ivo Nikolov, Atrium’s menswear buyer.

Mr. Murthy and Mr. Izquieta laid off four employees, bringing their work force to 25, and cut all advertising. They pulled out of the trade shows where they had sought new retailers. They stopped using airmail to ship some goods to and from their manufacturing facilities in China. They dropped the thread count of some woven shirts to 40 from 50. When their landlord declined to renegotiate their Los Angeles warehouse and office lease, they found new space for 50% less.
