J Lo’s high waist denim makeover

Wednesday, March 28th, 2007

Jlo’s always been my girl, since the days of Selena to her stints as a fly girl, we go back. She’s always had an amazing sense of style that no other star could really outdo. She always looks beautiful and well kept, but last weekend, we spotted Jlo hanging out with some fans, signing autographs and tragically wearing the most God-awful high waist, wide leg jeans that anyone could have ever imagined. Ladies, I did predict this happening in a past blog, I was just hoping Jlo wasn’t going to be the victim.

Jlo’s build is a lot like my own- she’s petite with wide hips and an infamous behind. In fact, other than her height being a bit on the shorter side (she’s 5′6″), most American women are built exactly like her, which is why when I saw the pictures of her in Berlin in those jeans, I pushed them to the side and just hoped that something better would come along… AND IT DID!

Jlo and hubby Marc Anthony returned home from Europe yesterday and made a surprise appearance at TRL in New York City to talk about the trip, the new single and update fans as to what is going on with their life. I nearly fell off my chair when I saw Jlo rocking a pair of dark wash, skinny high waist denim- she was flawless, it looked like she had lost about 20 pounds over the Atlantic Ocean!
As a woman obsessed with denim, I felt like it was my mission for the high waist loving readers to do a simple analysis as to why the dark wash high waist jeans were so much more flattering for her than the grey wide legs that she unfortunately wore in Berlin, so that you don’t make the same mistake as Jlo.
If you are on the shorter side, you must stay away from wide leg jeans! I’m serious. I was in
Chicago over the weekend and visited some of the hottest denim stores in the city, none of which really sold wide leg, in fact, Chicago seems to sell the skinniest bootleg jeans I’ve ever encountered, some along the lines of a  6″ leg opening! Needing to bring home a piece of the city in the form of fashion, I choose the skinniest cropped pair of jeans I could find (I’m short, so crops fit my inseam perfectly). They weren’t high waist however, because I didn’t see a pair that was very cute in the high waist section. I just wanted to try the skinniest of skinny jeans, but as soon as I got them on, suddenly the 9% sales tax and $XXX.XX price tag vaporized and I was in denim heaven. Imagine denim that made you look like a fox upon zipping up the fly- that’s what happened to me and to Jlo, we found our match. The insane 4″ leg opening made my legs look inches longer, it was incredible. I highly recommend skinny jeans to all of my petite readers. While I wound up maxing out my credit card in just one sitting, Jlo rocked the dark wash skinny high waist jeans like the diva that she is on TRL and I think we should all applaud her.
Another reason the grey ones weren’t working on her was because they had some kind of decorative element right on the pinnacle width of her hips, which is a definite no no when it comes to ladies with curves, especially shorter ladies. You want to avoid bringing added attention to the widest area of your body, the high waisted jeans counter act this by accentuating her tiny waist and drawing 2 symmetrical lines which both flatten her tummy and elongate her torso. She goes even a step further with the tight fitting vest and high heeled shoes. I’d have to say this is the best comeback Jlo has ever made, all within 2 days timing!

Patent not pending this season!

Monday, March 26th, 2007

Patent leather has always been one of my absolute favorite materials because of the wide spectrum of colors it is available in as well as its high gloss texture that would breathe life into any bland wardrobe; but up until recently it was disregarded as fashionable and furthermore deemed as wildly trashy and childish because of its association with tap dancing shoes and fetish clothing. Spring is showing us a different perspective with big time designers throwing splashes of patent leather into their collections, a pocketbook here, and a belt there, even jewelry is getting coated in this vibrant material!
It seems patent leather is making a comeback, but not the way we all expected. “This patent leather is not aggressive, not for power. It’s for fun, for crispness, for shine”, says trendsetting accessory designer, Kate Spade. “I imagine it with skinny cigarette pants and a khaki trench coat. Then theres the pop of a patent flat”.
The important thing to remember is that patent leather went out of style for a reason, and it was because people were covering themselves from head to toe in it (think cat woman or the cat suit Toni Braxton was wearing in the “You’re Makin’ Me High” video). Splashes of patent leather work out the best and could really jazz up your outfit! Some of the hottest stars are wearing it and that’s not including Queen Elizabeth and her patent lunchbox purses.
“The simplier, the better when it comes to patent leather” warns Michael Vollbracht, Bill Blass designer behind the patent leather shoes that stole the show on the Blass Spring runway.
I’ve searched high and low to find some super cute patent leather must haves to give you some ideas. From vintage to futuristic, pumps to pooch, cover the style spectrum with patent leather this season!

Janice Dickinson’s LA Fashion Week fiasco!

Tuesday, March 20th, 2007

Janice Dickinson has been banned from all events using model talent agency IMG after she reportedly caused chaos at a Los Angeles Fashion Week show Monday night.

The former model/television star refused to take her allocated seat at the Ed Hardy fashion show at Smashbox Studios and, instead, insisted on taking the seat belonging to fashion week organizer Fern Mallis at the edge of the catwalk.

She only agreed to move when Smashbox co-creator Davis Factor personally reprimanded her.

According to TMZ.com, Dickinson then “caused a scene backstage” when she stuck her foot in a giant tub of ice after claiming a model “broke her toe.”

Factory Girl Fashion

Saturday, March 3rd, 2007

As with most clever and highly anticipated independent movies that only make sense to niche markets, Factory Girl, the story of actress/model/muse Edie Sedgwick’s rise and addiction to fame, was not only disregarded as a good movie, but overlooked as an accurate historical representation of the coveted 1960’s fashion trend that has just so happen to infuse runways all around the world. If you aren’t familiar with the story, Edie Sedgwick was one of the most photographed women of the 60’s, deemed with the nickname “Youthquaker” by Vouge magazine in reference to the London based cultural movement and more than likely responsible for the new wave of designer runway vintage fashions looking like they were hand peeled right off the pages of her photo album. Like it or leave it, mod is back!

A brief analysis of this year’s Fashion Week could be summed up by recalling the biggest changes for women for the New Year; animal prints, navy blue, tailored, nautical, thigh high boots, skinny high waist jeans, interesting and oversized accessories, mini skirts, metallic fabric, leggings and whether or not the media wants to admit to it, the return of deathly thin. All of these same words could be used to describe the clothing in Edie Sedgwick’s closet, like it or not Edie IS the new face of fashion, although she’s been dead for over 30 years.

The following are some great photos I found of Edie Sedgwick that you can take notes from when shopping for that all important Spring wardrobe. (NOTE: stay in style by buying a shift dress as soon as possible!!)

Fashion Week 2007: New York

Thursday, March 1st, 2007

Besides this year’s New York Fashion Week being one of the most highly anticipated celebrity packed displays of future fashion trends to come, it was almost humbling to see that for the first time, with the record breaking and intensely wide range of designers participating, the show offered something for everyone. We all have our own individual style, and whether you like to admit it or not, we derive them from somewhere. Whatever your disposition is on fashion, one of the designers at New York’s Fashion Week represented it, because this year more than ever showed us that individuality is the key to success.

One of the biggest highlights of the entire show was the return of the once outlawed and deemed fashion fopa, navy blue, and the transformation in which it took. Used in both casual and formal wear, in tight fitting nautical styles and in tailored Napoleonic inspired fashions from flowing fabrics to structured ones, from shoes to hats, its all about navy, baby! As with all other deep rich intense hues, navy by its lonesome becomes a bit redundant, so designers paired it up with both splashes of warm color and modest pastels, creating a soft look perfect for the Spring wardrobe. Reds, purples and especially yellows dominated the runways in all aspects.

While all the buzz surrounded Marc Jacobs and his over-the-top unexpected reinvention of systematically delegated design principles, the Michael Kors Ready to Wear Collection was truly the best show all week. Embracing neutrality and fusing it with polar opposites like sequins and metallic embellishments, all the while throwing rude splashes of industrialized yellow and safety vest orange into the mix, the Ready to Wear Collection left on looking front row celebrities like Nicole Richie, Heidi Klum and Serena Williams in awe.

Plunging V necks and deep over exaggerated key holes brought the idealistic and coveted sexy back, back. He essentially raised the bar for the whole show by using leopard and other animal print accessories with contrasting and dissimilar textures, such as metallic vinyl and fringe.

Kors went fur happy and adorned many of his pieces with it, despite the overwhelming campaign made by PETA this year. Fur lined everything from the classic collar all the way down to trenches and anoraks, from swing dresses to the biggest new trend to hit the runway, the shift dress, if it could have fur, it did. Not only did he put up a fight to use the fur, he developed the new look of vintage, with double breasted pea coats and tiny matching berea’s, some of the collection embodied everything that is “That Girl”.

Compared to last year’s Fashion Week, this year seemed much more organized and refined and it really reflected upon the clothing in some fashion. Bulk was reduced to sheer and draped, the layered look was upgraded to tailored cut and paste and a simple animal print accessory can conquer us all.

Please take 1 minute and 45 seconds to view the highlights of the Michael Kors Fashion Week Runway. Trust me, less than 2 minutes can save you hours on Spring trend shopping!
