Who hates Hilary Duff? Apparently alot of people!

Wednesday, April 25th, 2007

Poor Hilary Duff, it seems like every time she steps out of the house anymore, someone is screaming death threats at her! The latest ones came while MuchMusic was interviewing her in Canada. Apparently Hilary was smiling sweetly, answering questions and being nice when all of a sudden, someone in the crowd stands up and starts threatening her, VOWING to kill her! He was immediately tackled, face planted into the pavement and taken away, of course. What did Hilary Duff do to Canada?! Is her new album THAT bad? I heard the new single, “With Love” and while I’m not crazy about it, the remixes are off the hook! I predict them to be played in the clubs all summer long. Sanjaya; the American Idol nightmare finally ends

After I saw the creator of the “Vote for the Worst” website that helped to keep Sanjaya on America Idol the other night on Leno, I was sure that with the promotion, we weren’t going to see the end of the caterpillar-eyed singer anytime soon, but lo and behold, last night, we finally got to say BYE BYE-A to SANJAYA!
I admit, I’m a little sad at the fact that I don’t have anyone to make fun of anymore, Sanjaya was really good at making me laugh so hard that I would cry, like that little brace faced 12 year old they gave the make over to.
Regardless, I’m sure this isn’t the true end of Sanjaya, just look at his following, including William Hung, brace face girl and someone who made a website who said they would starve themselves just for him.
Freaks.

BuzzSugar said it best, “Sanjaya — he of the ponyhawk, the creepy smile and the possible deal with the devil — ended his “American Idol” reign of terror on Wednesday after giving one of the only truly boring performances of his “Idol” career. No, I’m not kidding. That sound you heard was America gasping, then cheering. His tears at the end were oddly reassuring; I think he really did want to win and wasn’t just treating the whole thing as a joke. He also gets points for changing the chorus of his farewell song to: ‘Let’s give ‘em something to talk about — other than hair.’”

Now I suppose the biggest question is which contestant Vote for the Worst will pick next? Any suggestions?

Avril Lavigne… WTF?!

Last night as I was flipping around all of the late night talk shows, I came across raccoon eyed Avril Lavigne and had to stop and gawk. I’m not particularly fond of the young singer’s music but what she was wearing just had me laughing like ticklish baby. I thought that the Jay Leno stint was the end of it, UNTIL I saw that my favorite gossip site had pictures of her in a pink tulle dress with DOC MARTIN on. Ew.
I have to admit, she is quite the entertainer when it comes to fashion. I just can’t stand what she wears, to me it screams, “HEY, I’m in high school and I have an attitude, rawr”. When I was seventeen and it was ok to wear checkered suspenders, plaid pants, oversized hot pink accessories and fitted CBGB tee shirts, what she was wearing would have probably inspired me to go out and spend my money on a new studded belt or 7 bottles of black liquid eyeliner, but today, it just seems pointless, dated, and over and done with. Even the fact that her new album title has a slightly censored “damn” in it is just downright annoying. She had to pull away from the microphone when she would curse in the song “Girlfriend” which was at least a tell tale sign that she was actually singing. But still, if they weren’t trying to market to late night TV watchers, why was she on Jay Leno?
No diss to her singing voice, because the girl can belt it out, but Avril, please, get a new stylist. The way you’re dressing is terrible and annoying. Although you might not have written the song, we still want to know why you had to make your fashion disasters so complicated. Keep it simple; nice sleek patterns would work well on you and your long multi colored hair; you need something with a little class. I’ll buy you some clothes, seriously. eModa <3s you, we don’t want you to ruin your career.

Brand in Demand: Dom Rebel

Tuesday, April 17th, 2007

Think Tyler Durden attitude meets Sailor Jerry tattoos with a mastermind business plan and you have the sweet style of Montreal based clothing company, Dom Rebel, the brand that threw out conventional mass production techniques and gave a whole new meaning to handcrafted street wear.

When designer (and hottie) Justin Svatina started sketching tee shirt designs in his mechanical engineering classes, he never thought that it would lead to an internationally recognized clothing brand ingeniously named Dom Rebel. He started selling shirts to his friends and after meeting Don Nguyen, a marketing student, they decided to start a business that would not only independently produce tees on a large scale, but do it in limited runs, ensuring unique individuality and putting an end to “hands off” business mentality.

“The idea behind that (limited run clothing) is to give a special value to every piece that we make. We want to avoid having people come across someone with the same shirt. So when retailers place their orders, we enforce ceilings on every style and we generally don’t provide reorders”, says Nguyen.

Justin admits that it wasn’t an easy process. “We’ve taken our parents through hell by ruining their washing machines, dryers, appliances, backyards and garages trying to develop new washing techniques. We find ourselves looking at some of the pieces and saying ‘Holy Shit, how’d we do that?’”

Dom Rebel embraces the appeal of sex, rebellion and, of course, rock and roll. Justin says that like many LA brands, he is inspired by the tattoo/motorcycle lifestyle, but what really drives him to create the masterpieces that he draws up is a fusion of music and the rebels and rockers behind it. He named tasteful bands such as Death From Above 1979, Wolfmother, Nirvana, Queen and Johnny Cash as well as historic rebellious icons like Marlon Brando, James Dean and Sid Vicious that continue to inspire him and drive him to go farther.

“I listened to the song ‘Spread Your Love’ by Black Rebel Motorcycle Club over and over when I drew my first logos”, says Justin, who also mentioned that the song “Blood on Our Hands” by DFA1979 defines the brand in his eyes. “It’s a personal thing, having achieved a certain amount of success in an industry that we didn’t belong in at first”.

Besides the success of their Sands of Sins and Forbidden Paradise lines, Dom Rebel has also been widely successful with the Art Gallery line, which is extremely limited (in runs of about 10) and shows the true individuality of the brand. With incredible attention to detail and extremely grueling hand placed crystal embellishment, Justin compares his work with the Art Gallery line to Francis Bacon, who is known for his “knowledge is power” philosophy and whose art is known for telling stories. “The better you know yourself, the better you will understand life”, Justin says.

Forehead Bands- Hollywood goes hipster

What happens when you take your thin elastic headband and slide it down from the top of your head to your forehead, virtually creating a brand new style reminiscent of both the aerobics phenomenon of the 80’s as well as the eclectic style of female American Indians? You get the Forehead Band.
Hipsters have been rocking the thin forehead band for years now, but Hollywood has slowly been picking up on our ways, and of course they would get on this hot look and make it trendy. I just so happened to be wearing my DIY forehead band today, made from an old unused periwinkle shoelace I found in my makeup drawer while moving. Mary Kate’s is actually made from real hair, kind of cool, kind of weird.
What do you guys think? Is the world ready for the forehead band? Personally I like it, it’s a quick fix for frizzy hair, uncontrollable bangs and a boring hair routine.

Headscarves, why every girl should have one!

Wednesday, April 4th, 2007

I’m a Spring person; I like the blooming flowers, mild temperatures and puddle jumping with friends. The one thing I do not like about Spring is that I have to put the bulk of my coveted hat collection in storage because they are too hot to wear in the Spring and Summer and it just looks plain silly. It may be the types of hats that I buy, mainly fedora style bucket hats, that just don’t compliment an average Spring wardrobe, but sometimes I crave the feeling of having my hair covered, aka when I’m having a bad hair day, hung over or its too poofy after I blow dry it. It was only until recently when I was analyzing the Spring runway trends that I noticed the increasingly noticeable fixation that some designers had with headscarves. Headscarves are the Spring equivalent of a Winter hat. Us ladies should not be expected to have great hair everyday, and that’s exactly why we all need to introduce these fabulous rags into our wardrobe.
While some of the styles on the runway are a bit over the top (as with all runway looks), I’ve found some pretty awesome examples of practical application with headscarves.

Celebrities like Jessica Simpson are always caught wearing them, but I believe Nicole Richie is the queen of the headscarf revolution.

Mary Kate takes it to the next level, wearing the scarf as a turban, love it!

The wait for Kate Moss’s clothing collection is OVER!

Wednesday, April 4th, 2007

It’s the talk of every blog, fashion journal and every other publication having to do with any aspect of fashion- the Kate Moss Topshop Look Book has been published! To tell you the truth, it wasn’t at all what I had expected from the English born supermodel. I’m a little flip flopped on whether or not I really like it; when I consider that everything besides the super cute dresses are fashioned with a bit too much masculinity, it makes me think that Kate wants us all to look like her hotta hotta boyfriend, Pete Doherty.  I will say this, Kate has her style all over this collection, she totally had control of the pieces, you can just tell. If you look at pictures of her running around town with Pete or just getting a coffee, she’s mostly wearing clothing that looks exactly like pieces in her collection. So for that, I have much respect for her, she put her foot down and showed the world of fashion that she’s much more than just a runway model.
Here’s a link to a great video I found of Kate and the Topshop design team in action!
