rock & republic make philanthropy fashionable with “rock the cure!”

Wednesday, October 31st, 2007
founded earlier this year by R&R ceo and creative director michael ball, rock the cure is Rock & Republic’s new amazing philanthropic division. ball found himself unimpressed with the charirtable donations and efforts of other companies and corporations, and decided to do something a little drastic. having created one specialty item for each one of the R&R collections (everything from jackets to denim to footwear), 100% of the profits for each special item will go directly to a charitable foundation.

the ‘07/’08 cause will be none other than City of Hope, a so-cal medical center geared towards treatment and research for those with cancer and other life-threatening illnesses. in addition to proceeds from sales, Rock & Republic will be holding a series of events to fundraise for the center, including film festivals, intimate dinners and concerts.

‘Rock the Cure’ reflects michael ball’s vision for corporate philanthropy, and by setting a precedent, he’s a pioneer in the movement to eradicate life-threatening diseases.

christian audigier: haute couture honcho

Friday, October 26th, 2007

fashion whiz Christian Audigier is definitely a heavy-hitter in the fashion world!

christian audigier is the mastermind behind several of the hottest labels right now…his knack for fashion and edgy designs play a big part, as well as his ability to stay connected to the ever-changing fashion scene. below are a sampling of some of the projects he has a hand in.

christian audigier’s namesake line gives casual wear a haute couture makeover. these products usually feature detailed prints and regal graphics (family crest emblems, argyle patterns, etc.), ensuring style ‘king’ status for any that sport this unique look.

audigier’s SMET line, however, is definitely geared to the streetwear fan…literally, as its slogan is ‘born on the street.’ edgy designs and classic vintage graphics (i.e. fleur-de lis emblems) are prominent, as well as text and branding. despite its streetwise image, however, the SMET line is fashioned from the same premium fabrics and washes as audigier’s other lines…high-end urban apparel at its very best.

one of the most popular brands on eModa.com is none other than the Ed Hardy line. inspired by legendary tattoo mastermind…you guessed it…Ed Hardy, this edgy, modern line boasts amazing detail, unique motifs and, of course, tattoo-inspired designs.

these items and more are available at eModa.com.

foley + corinna: the glamour girl’s dream brand

Tuesday, October 23rd, 2007
yesterday i did a bit on the return of the men’s line True Love & False Idols to eModa.com, and today i wanted to highlight a women’s brand that’s pulling out all the stops for us girls that love to play dress-up. the brand i’m referring to is none other than vintage couture powerhouses dana foley and anna corinna, commonly known as Foley + Corinna. these exceptional women worked out of their high-profile boutique in manhattan’s lower east side for quite some time, and have finally decided to branch out and make their collection of vintage finds available to the masses.

Foley + Corinna’s irresistible combinations have drawn a cult following from the likes of starlets stella mccartney and liv tyler and it’s plain to see why: combing through their collection is like rummaging through your chicest girlfriend’s closet…they seem to effortlessly infuse premium fabrics with unique accents (who knew sequins had a place in haute couture?!) for an old movie star look with a sex, modern twist. check out these and other selections at eModa.com.

true love & false idols returns to emoda.com

Monday, October 22nd, 2007
after being sold out for quite some time, we at eModa.com recently reintroduced the hot LA couture brand True Love & False Idols to our stable of high-end brands. designed by native californians alex vaz and alex 2tone, this line of tattoo-inspired, graphically-saturated clothing is being billed as “designer streetwear with a premium aesthetic rooted in LA culture, punk and hip hop.”

alex vaz (left) is an OC native, fashion design school graduate and former member of cali’s hardcore punk scene. alex 2tone is an avid graf artist, former tattoo apprentice and film school grad. while the pair crossed paths several times while growing up, usually under unpleasant circumstances, they finally buried the hatchet and joined creative forces when they became colleagues at Howe Denim (another eModa.com brand) a few years back. Having launched True Love & False Idols in august 2005, the brand quickly took off as THE premier urban couture label, gracing the frames of hip hop giants like t.i., rick ross, jim jones and rich boy.

with their awesomely rad slogan, ‘in love with a lifestyle i can’t afford,’ one may be surprised to find that TL&FI’s clothing is reasonably priced, giving fans of the brand the opportunity to incorporate some of their unique designs into their own wardrobe. Currently the brand caters only to men’s tops, but the Alexes hope to eventually introduce a full-blown women’s line as well as expanding their line of men’s apparel. check out the creations shown above as well as other amazing pieces at eModa.com!

spotlight on the ladies: a sampling of our clothing for women

Friday, October 19th, 2007
recently i did a piece on the massive popularity of affliction’s edgy couture, and i wanted to put the spotlight on some of our women’s clothing as well!

Sinful, the sister brand to couture giants Affliction, has definitely been setting the fashion world ablaze! the brand definitely has a way with edgy, rock star clothing…true to form, they take the dark shades and nebulous graphics that Affliction is famous for and give them a feminine spin. tattoo-inspired designs have without a doubt been prominent this season, and Sinful has been at the forefront, going so far as to commission world-renowned tattoo artists to create their unique designs, and this move has really paid off. starlets are feeling the fire as well, as bombshells like jaime pressly, tila tequila and guiliana depandi have all been seen around town sporting these trendy threads. if you’re looking to release your inner (or outer) bad girl, Sinful is truly the brand for you!

platinum-haired performer gwen stefani has her hand in more than just music. her Harajuku Lovers line, designed especially for her fans, is making serious waves with its japanese-inspired flavor and unique styling. launched in 2005, the brand is inspired by the shibuya, tokyo region of harajuku (“meadow lodging”), and specifically gwen’s four japanese backup dancers/entourage (love, angel, music and baby). having visited tokyo for the first time back in 1996, she developed an instant fascination with the individualism and self-expression of the youth of japan. gwen intended the line to be an extension of sorts from her 2004 album L.A.M.B. and fans of the artist will notice that many of the pieces allude to themes and lyrics from her songs. for peerless designs and a girly, modern look,
Harajuku Lovers is a must!

Chip & Pepper made a smart move back in 2003 when they moved their clothing line from canada to the sun-soaked shores of cali! their high-end clothing collection is rapidly gaining popularity and it’s no wonder why…they effortlessly infuse vintage washes with premium fabrics for a dynamic look and superior fit. their denim collection is billed as “the resurrection of the classic american jean with a modern twist,” and their ‘university collection’ will have you rooting for your favorite team in style and comfort. each piece is fashioned from only the finest weaves and wefts, the zenith of american workmanship, and the Chip & Pepper brand as a whole is a testament to the comeback of accessible and affordable high-end couture.

well, there you have it…just a sampling of the sexy, modern women’s clothing we carry here at eModa.com. feel free to email me at kristen@emoda.com with any questions, or if you’d like to see a piece done on your favorite brand!

a mini mix-and-match style guide

Friday, October 12th, 2007

as one of the product description writers for emoda.com, i look at clothing all. day. long. it’s my job to describe virtually every detail of the products we carry…from the wash to the whiskers, from tea stains to branding, the color, the texture, etc. hey, ever wonder what the buttons on your jeans are made of? neither have i, but it’s my job to find out, lol. there are many perks that come with the territory, though…for one, i often stumble across random pieces that happen to go really well together, and i figured i’d be doing a disservice by not sharing these tidbits with you, loyal reader…so here they are in my personal mini mix-and-match style guide.

here we have the Tight Hoodie in Purple by DCVR and 5 Pocket Bootcut Jeans with Leather and Studs from Antik Denim. The awesome plum hue of the hoodie definitely works with the denim color, especially with those black tea stains. The real style comes from the presence of black studs on both pieces…i’m a big fan of seemingly effortless coordination. (’oops…i just happened to fall into this shirt and those pants and i look amazing! wonder how that happened?) so yeah…the black studs compliment each other without being over the top. definitely a cool ensemble for fall. throw in an Amigaz Black Shine Wallet Chain (if you’re into that type of thing) and you have yourself a rockin’ ensemble.

and here we have the very cool Skillman Shirt in Tan from Triple Five Soul and True Religion’s Joey in Chainsaw. as you can see, the sandblasted distress on the denim goes great with the khaki pigmentation of the shirt, but what you may not be able to see is that the back of the shirt features a blue plaid pattern that flows awesomely with the vintage blue wash of the denim! (note…these true religion jeans also have tan topstitching…styled to the gills, baby!)

and ladies, i certainly haven’t forgotten about us…though i work mainly on men’s product descriptions i do comb through the women’s clothing from time to time and have seen pieces that, when combined, are guaranteed to crank your diva-meter to an 11! here are a couple of examples:

here we have the Red Heart Jacket from gwen stefani’s pet project Harajuku Lovers combined with the Cranberry Skinny Jean by BLANK. BLANK Jeans are definitely bringing color back to the denim world with this hot pair of 80s-style, cigarette cut jeans, and paired with the super-cute Harajuku Lovers jacket, complete with its red topstitch and zippers, you’re good to go for this fall season.

…and here’s the Raw Edge Skull Hoodie in Pink by 2 B Free paired with Frankie B’s Icon Straight Leg Jean with Pink Stitch. I’ve never been the type to limit myself solely to earth-tones and muted colors simply because the warmer seasons have ended, and with this hoodie/jean combo, you can still sport a feminine look while staying warm…sacrificing comfort for style’s sake is a no-no, i say!

so there we have it folks…just a few of the ensembles that you can put together for a hot look, even in cool weather. feel free to email me at kristen@emoda.com if you have any questions…in fact, if you’d like to email me your own combo suggestions, i’d love to do a blog featuring style tips from the readers!

gillie da kid shouts out emoda!

Thursday, October 11th, 2007

check out this video of philadelphia’s own gillie da kid representing emoda!!!

emoda.com is blowing up, baby! the latest public mention of our site has been made by none other than philly rap legend gillie da kid, formerly of hip-hop group major figgas. major figgas were responsible for the radio smash “yeah, that’s us” from 2000 (a quick trip to youtube had me two-stepping down memory lane, lol). as the millennium continued, however, the members of major figgas decided to pursue solo careers when the hype generated by their first single failed to translate in terms of album sales. gillie da kid, after a chance meeting with baby (a/k/a ‘birdman’ of cash money fame…the ‘daddy’ rapper lil wayne refers to in the song “stuntin’ like my daddy”), was signed to cash money records. unfortunately, the relationship soon turned sour, and amidst feuds over publishing rights and ghostwriting allegations (gillie claims to have written the vast majority of lil wayne’s chart-topping album, ‘tha carter,’), the parties separated. despite a setback from a june 2006 shooting (in which gillie was shot 3 times, an ‘attempted murder’ according to the police) as well as a february 2007 arrest (about which he maintains his innocence), gillie da kid’s first release in years, “the best of the gdk mixtapes,” dropped in march 2007 via babygrande records with critical acclaim.

now back on his game, gillie da kid made a recent appearance on b.e.t.’s ‘rap city’ and made sure to let everyone know about his favorite clothing company, none other than emoda! sporting a limited-edition emoda tee (designed for us by couture brand doctrine and available on our site for those of you that want to show your love as well), he gave us a bona-fide shout-out on national tv…how awesome is that?!

for those of you who watch b.e.t., the bit will air again tomorrow (friday) at 5pm.

the new celebrity addiction: affliction!

Wednesday, October 10th, 2007

affliction brand clothing has definitely been resonating on the celebrity scene! between bands like all-american rejects and avenged sevenfold to rock n’ roll legend ozzy
osbourne, musicians/actors jamie foxx and ll cool j, and even the athletes of the ufc, pretty much everywhere you look you’re bound to see affliction’s trademark graphically nebulous couture.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at PhotobucketPhoto Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

one of the most recent sightings involves none other than everyone’s favorite ‘mindfreak’ illusionist criss angel! criss is reportedly a big fan of the brand, having sported it in many an episode of the 3rd season of his television program, currently in production. also, criss recently gave a mini-performance of his amazing routine at the affliction table at a trade show of late.

legendary rocker nikki sixx of mötley crüe and sixx:am fame has also been spotted in affliction’s threads, most recently in the latest issue of metal edge magazine.

the great thing about affliction’s clothing is that, though it was first launched back in august ‘05, it continues to remain newsworthy. drawing inspiration from music, sports and, of course, tattoo culture, the dark, intricate designs that adorn the brand’s premium fabrics are nothing short of amazing.

i’m not saying that we should base our personal style off of what celebrities are wearing, but it’s a fact that famous people are definitely fickle about their fashion and only sport the most cutting-edge couture; all other drivel quickly falls by the wayside. (remember ’von dutch’ trucker hats? yeah, me neither.)

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at PhotobucketPhoto Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

it’s a clear testament to the relevance and durability of the brand, i believe, that, as we move into fall ‘07, affliction brand clothing is only getting bigger. having just launched their -red label- premium collection, i have a hunch this company’s logo will be seen across the  backs, chests and arms of famous and non-famous style kings for many years to come.

six degrees of separation: my connection to jessica simpson

Tuesday, October 9th, 2007

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
i kid you not, folks…i can connect myself to jessica simpson in six degrees or less…in three, actually, now that i think about it. ready? here goes: jessica simpson’s fave jean brand is true religion, MY fave jean brand is true religion and…omg…the site i work for, emoda.com, SELLS true religion jeans!

yes, it’s true…although i don’t know how good it is for jessica simpson. apparently, the blonde bombshell agreed to a contract with a distributing company to develop and promote a low-end clothing line. according to the terms of the deal, she was to be a part of publicly wearing and promoting the line. (i’m guessing this should’ve been fairly obvious…doubtful the company involved her because of her savvy business skills. i’m just saying.) but yes, basically she was getting paid to rock the gear in front of the cameras and plug it when the photogs asked about the brand she was wearing. unfortunately, ol’ jess couldn’t contain her love for true religion jeans any more than i can, and when asked at an event what her favorite brand of jeans was, that’s exactly the brand she named. the cheap-o brand she was supposed to endorse wasn’t mentioned at all.

next thing you know, jessica’s getting sued to the tune of $100M for failure to promote the brand. what’d you expect? the moral of the story is…true religion’s sexy, premium jeans are no match for run-of-the-mill digs, but i’m sure most of you are aware of that. (for those of you who aren’t, email me at kristen@emoda.com for a list of…um…’discount’ stores.)

tune in next week when i do ’six degrees of separation’ between myself and barack obama…can you say, ‘xtreme couture‘ baby? yeah!
