Michelle Obama Honored for Her Commitment to Fashion!

Monday, March 23rd, 2009

Back in January, we at eModa blogged about the nearly-impeccable fashion sense of First Lady Michelle Obama…the most in-vogue First Lady since the legendary Jackie O! Michelle is still receiving love and praises from the fashion industry, as evidenced by this recent story, taken from Yahoo! Fashion News:

NEW YORK – Michelle Obama keeps feeling the love from the fashion world.

The Council of Fashion Designers of America announced Monday that Mrs. Obama will be honored with a special tribute from the group’s board of directors at its annual awards gala in June.

“We wanted to acknowledge her in a serious way for her commitment to American fashion,” said CFDA president Steven Kolb. A grant also will be established in her name to assist a young fashion company.

Meanwhile, three designers that Mrs. Obama has been known to wear — Narciso Rodriguez, Jason Wu and Thakoon Panichgul — also received CFDA nominations.

Rodriguez joins Marc Jacobs and sisters Laura and Kate Mulleavy of Rodarte as the nominees for womenswear designer of the year, and Wu, Panichgul and Alexander Wang are in the running for the Swarovski Award for emerging talent in women’s fashion.

Jacobs, already one of the industry’s favorite sons, continued to rack up his own accolades as a nominee once again in accessory design and as the winner of the international designer award for his work at Louis Vuitton. (Jacobs splits his time between the Vuitton label, headquartered in Paris, and his own signature collection, which is shown in New York.)

“He’s a pioneer as an American in Europe,” Kolb said.

Anna Sui is to receive the lifetime achievement award named for the late Geoffrey Beene.

The ceremony is moving this year from the New York Public Library to Lincoln Center, which will also become the Fashion Week hub next year. Mrs. Obama will receive an invitation, but Kolb was unsure if she’d attend.

“We’ll do whatever we can to get her here, but the award isn’t about getting her to come,” he said.

Art Imitates Life: How India’s Biggest Fashion Show Dealt with the Recession

Thursday, March 19th, 2009

“Frugality is the new black,” at least according to Indian designer Kiran Uttam Ghosh, whose collection (that was featured at the Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week, a 5-day fashion event that took place recently) was inspired by the current global downturn. Many of the designers’ collections used the current recession as a focal point of the lines they debuted. From black, grey and deep purple color schemes to noteworthy juxtapositions of luxurious, high-end pieces with cheaper, off-the-rack articles of clothing, this fashion show was an excellent and noteworthy commentary on the financial (and emotional) state of affairs our world is in.

Madonna, Guy Ritchie Exhibit Model Behavior…

Tuesday, March 17th, 2009

Guy Ritchie and Elle Macpherson, seen leaving separately from a London restaurant after a romantic dinner...
Not that we don’t have love for Madonna here at eModa.com (after all, she’s a living legend, an iconic performer whose career has spanned decades and shows no signs of slowing down), but we are more than a  bit pleased to see the former “Mr. Madonna”, British filmmaker Guy Ritchie hooking up with former model Elle MacPherson. Elle has such impeccable style (as any self-respecting ex-model should, of course) and Mr. Ritchie isn’t too shabby in the closet himself. Madonna, on the other hand…well…let’s just say her wardrobe doesn’t seem very “Material Girl-ish” to us! But Ms. Ciccone is probably not -too- jealous of this pairing…after all, she’s been hooking up with a model of her own…the gorgeous Jesus Cruz. The main difference between her hottie hookup is that Cruz is reportedly a whopping 28 years younger than the musical maven…talk about “robbing the cradle!”

eModa’s Michelle Miller Grills “The Boss”…Rick Ross!

Monday, March 16th, 2009

Our own Michelle Miller (eModa’s resident stylish and PR/Marketing whiz) sat down with Miami rap (and, allegedly, drug) kingpin Rick Ross for an interview! Michelle (a/k/a/ Misha) is working diligently on said interview, which will be made available for your viewing pleasure on our sister blog. M&M. (The “M’s” stand for Misha and Marina (Kogan), eModa.com’s buyer women’s buyer.)

Floridian MC Rick Ross (real name William Roberts II) burst onto the scene in the summer of 2006 with his battering-ram of a debut, Port of Miami. Powered by the monster single “Hustlin’” (the remix of which featured a four-star guest verse from Jay-Z) and “Push It” (which sampled the theme song from the consummate gangster film, Scarface ), Ross quickly rose to the top of the charts. His gritty brand of drug-fueled hip-hop stands out from the rest with its somewhat relaxed delivery and Ross’ frequent exhibition of playfulness…he sounds like a boss who’s already made it and can afford to take it easy. Misha’s interview with the rapper will detail a different side of his personality: fashion! Ross is definitely a big guy, standing at 6 feet and roughly 300 pounds…Misha’s interview will detail his take on dressing for success when so many high-end designers limit their lines to smaller sizes. Check back for updates…we’ll let you know when the full interview is available!

Alexander McQueen’s New Collection Wows Parisians during French Fashion Week

Thursday, March 12th, 2009

From Paris’ Associated Press comes this interesting story of how an ‘eccentric Englishman’ stole the spotlight from some of France’s own designers:

Alexander McQueen stole the other Paris designers’ thunder on Tuesday with a darkly beautiful pret-a-porter collection that couldn’t help reminding the viewer of just how grand fashion can be.

That the eccentric Englishman managed to outshine other Paris designers was a feat considering Tuesday included displays by heavy-hitters Chanel and Valentino — which both sent out strong collections that remained true to their heritage.

Chanel delivered dark tweed suits dressed up with removable frills, while Valentino’s new design duo served up impeccable 1960s glamour.

Another eccentric, France’s Jean-Charles de Castelbajac, also delivered a wildly inventive collection, his featuring the Muppets — with Fozzie Bear-emblazoned suits and a rock star shag coat made from stuffed Kermit the Frogs.

But none could rival McQueen, whose darkly ingenious and bizarrely sublime show garnered cheers, hoops and whistles of approval from the normally tepid fashion crowd.

Paris’s winter 2010 ready-to-wear shows continue Wednesday with displays by Kenzo, Hermes, John Galliano and red-carpet favorite Elie Saab.

ALEXANDER McQUEEN

A dress made entirely from slick black feathers, with oversized bouffant sleeves sculpted to suggest a swan hurtling into flight. A cocktail dress with a bust made of a jumble of leather straps and a full skirt of tight looping ruffles with a garbage-bag black sheen.

These were pieces that cried out to be worn — with extravagance and wild abandon — but probably belonged more in a museum than in a closet. It was fashion as art — wearable art to be lusted after.

Working with a palette of graphic black, red and white, the McQueen took tactful staples like the skirt suit and the strapless cocktail dress and pushed them beyond the boundaries of politeness.

He nipped the New Look suit’s wasp-waist even further, inflated its square shoulders and fluffed up the crinoline skirts. He padded the cascading train of a strapless evening gown until its skirts turned into a sort of bean bag that the model struggled to shuffle around the runway.

The black and white houndstooth checks that opened the show gave way to a red and black M.C. Escher-inspired print of ducks in flight that morph into houndstooth. McQueen also heaped on metalwork-studded hardware and feathers.

Hats made from open umbrellas, lampshades or a sculpture of found objects wrapped in clear plastic film topped off the looks.

Models, their faces covered in white and their mouths an oversized smear of red lipstick, picked their way around a huge pile of stylized rubbish in the middle of the catwalk and stopping in front of the photographers, leered.

It was beauty transformed into ugliness and then back into beauty again.

Mario Lopez Looks “Extra” Hot in his Taverniti Jeans!

Wednesday, March 11th, 2009

Mario Lopez, best known for his role as A.C. Slater on the consummate 90s teen sitcom Saved By The Bell, has done much to flourish in his career as an adult actor. He’s hosted shows for the MTV and Animal Planet networks and has made guest appearances on shows like Nip/Tuck, Resurrection Blvd. and Eve. He’s even had a role on the popular soap opera The Bold & The Beautiful and has hosted several high-profile beauty pageants. These days, Mario’s full-time job is being the weekday host on the prime-time entertainment program Extra. What’s interesting to notice, however, is that in many of the episodes Mario appears in, he’s always dressed impeccably…and one of his favorite brands seems to be Taverniti…the man is spotted in Tav jeans all the time! We here at eModa aren’t suprised by this one bit…Taverniti denim is one of the major trendsetters in the denim market, what with the brand’s penchant for vintage washes, unique stitching, pocket detail and appliques. Click here to check out the Taverniti denim line at eModa.com, and check out Mario (who was recently voted People Magazine’s Hottest Bachelor) weeknights on the Extra program!

The Top Five Reasons to Check Out Ed Roth Clothing!

Friday, March 6th, 2009

1 — Originality First to put artwork on a T-shirt. Before Ed, T-shirts were white and boring. Back in the early 60’s, Southern California had lots of car clubs and they had car club jackets…but since it was too hot to wear those jackets in the summer, Ed started airbrushing tees with the car airbrush tool he was using to work on his cars.

2 — Counter Culture Anti-Hero – When Walt Disney World came to California and he hated their brand of corporate phony entertainment… so he drew “Rat Fink.” Rather than following what was considered as good taste by the society, Ed Roth created the character of ‘Rat Fink’ as the counter-culture answer to Mickey Mouse and made a statement that bad taste, was good.

3 — Fiberglass – Ed pioneered the use of fiberglass in his car, Outlaw, while others were using plaster and clay or restyling existing cars.

4 — Juvenile Rebellion Movement – In the 60’s and 70’s Ed’s monster shirts were part of the uniform to the youth culture who used them to impress peers and at the same time offend and gross out parents and teachers.

5 — Notoriety – His fearless designs got him kicked out of numerous car shows and earned him the reputation of building some of the most unique and often trendsetting car creations ever built.
