Olympic Fashion
For those of you thinking the Olympics is all about sports, I give you American figure skater Johnny Weir. Known almost as much for his off-ice antics and unapologetic flamboyance as his skating, Weir has just announced that he’ll be starting his own fashion line and opening several retail stores.
Weir is featured in the Sundance Channel’s reality series Be Good Johnny Weir and has been co-designing his costumes with Stephanie Handler. Handler tells WWD that Weir has a good understanding of the industry and is very involved in each detail of the design process.
While figure skating costumes and their sequins and feathers may not be the best indicator of an eye for fashion, Weir’s reputation for pushing boundaries and taking risks are two qualities found in some of our most iconic designers.
Oh, and for those of you interested in the sports, Weir turned in a fantastic short program on Tuesday night putting him in 6th place before the long program. (Low scores if you want my honest opinion.)
