Animals Lovers Beware: Fur is Back

The NY Times reports that of the 130 collections shown at Fashion Week,  2/3 included fur.  Oscar de la Renta, Michael Kors, Proenza Schouler and DVF all sent fur down the runway.

As furriers push hard against a market that used to be fiercely anti-fur, young designers reap the benefits.  North American Fur Auctions (NAFA) and Saga are just two furriers offering free fur to young designers.  The benefit for them is the hope that the collections will be picked up by retailers and the shows will be well reviewed.

Naturally, PETA is furious calling the give-aways, “a smoke and mirrors campaign where they give designers money and free fur to accessorize the runway, even though that stuff never ends up in shops.”  Designers fire back stating that the use of fur is strictly a convention of design and not an attempt to rebel.  To many, using fur is no different than using leather.

Though fur was prevalent on the runway, it’s still difficult to predict what the resurgence will mean to retailers.
