Calvin Klein Changes Sizes

Friday, 23 April, 2010

Calvin Klein will (reportedly) stop booking the size zero model.  Francisco Costa, creative director, said that casting has become “a little too formulaic” and is looking to use healthier, more realistic models in his upcoming campaigns and runway shows.  The brand will now book size 2-4 rather than 0-2.

Rumor has it Costa has booked Lara Stone as this fall’s face of Calvin Klein.  Stone is notorious for speaking out against the inachievable expectations the industry places on models.  (She’s a gorgeous size 4.)

With this shift, we real women have more hope that the fashion world is finally on it’s way to embracing the female figure as we know it.

Shock and Awe: how celebs do it

Tuesday, 20 April, 2010

When in doubt, ape; when caught, show off! Confused? Feels like you’re missing a keyword? Yessir, that would be celebrity fashion. Time and again, celebrities have inspired ‘look’s that have been aped by millions of fashion conscious men and women, be it Julia Roberts’ bags or Jennifer Aniston’s hair or Sarah Jessica Parker’s patterns, no wait, that would be Carrie Bradshaw’s or even Lady Gaga’s…I don’t know, grotesqueness? Oh yes, it is the in-thing to ape a celeb. Always.

But can you really pull off a Beyonce? Not if you are petite and slender like Posh Beckham? Well then, can you pull off a Posh? Not if you are really an unassuming and laid-back person! It doesn’t help to be wanna-be. Check out Kristen Stewart in a hot leather dress by Jasmine de Milo. Like we knew there’s a dress that would go with her never-smile attitude! Couture specialists like Kim Kardashian couldn’t pull off the dress the way KStew did.

But then the girl gets just a little conscious of her grungy jeans and tanks look for once and try to pull off hot couture with a Chanel at the BAFTAs.

But did she really? With that slouch and oh-no-the-world’s-gonna-end expression, I don’t think so! Pulling off a look, whether it is a celebrity’s or one in hot couture is not about wearing the same clothes and shoes and bags. More times than you think ‘you’ are what your look is about.

Talking about celebs who define their style, check out Rihanna redefining the pop-star look with just worn out denim over an LBD and pumps that spell attitude.

Shoes can take you a long way in defining your style. If you are a little unsure about your outfit, think it a little dowdy or lacking the oomph, implement the shock and awe element with your boots. Guess what Khloe Kardashian’s wearing for a recent social event. A nice red dress alright, but the shoes…! How they stole the thunder of scarlet! She wore Christian Louboutins that well, didn’t match so much but brought so much color to her outfit—literally.

Christian Louboutins are always a hot favorite among celebs, them being just the type to spice up any outfit. Check out Jennifer Aniston in a hot pair. While Aniston seldom comes out of her comfort zone in blacks and grays, she shoes do just the job of characterizing her outfit.

Too much or too little, the hottest fashionistas of today’s world seem to carve out their signature styles with great élan and it sure doesn’t hurt to go after ‘that bag’ or ‘that dress’ that lady was wearing.

Kelly Cutrone Dishes Advice

Friday, 19 March, 2010

If you’re a follower of fashion or reality TV, you’ve likely heard of Kelly Cutrone.  Cutrone is the powerhouse behind prominent PR firm People’s Revolution who gave MTV’s Lauren Conrad and Whitney Port jobs and some tough love.

Cutrone’s latest TV venture on Bravo, Kell On Earth, centers on the operations of People’s Revolution and gives us a fascinating look at the world before, after and beyond the runway.  Episodes feature frazzled designers, emotionally and professionally incompetent assistants, and best of all, a woman at the top of her game (kicking ass and taking names!).

Cutrone is intimidating, demanding and absolutely terrifying.  She is also ambitious, passionate, kind and nurturing.  She’s the boss you fear and love.  Cutrone’s taken what she’s learned and put it into the book, If You Have to Cry, Go Outside … And Other Things Your Mother Never Told You.  The book is working it’s way up the NY Times Bestseller list and earning praise for its unique approach to life lessons.  It’s the perfect read for today’s modern woman bent on doing things her way.

Kate Moss Looking Good and Doing Good

Tuesday, 16 March, 2010

Supermodel Kate Moss is doing her part to prevent and treat malaria.  Moss modeled a William Tempest corseted dress made of recycled malaria nets for UK group Sport Relief 2010.

Malaria is a mosquito-borne infectious disease found in tropical and subtropical regions that kills between one and three million people each year.  Malara is preventable and treatable.  The insecticide-treated mosquito net is one of the easiest and most cost-effective ways to combat the spread of malaria.

Commenting on her role in the efforts Moss stated,”‘I was shocked to hear that one child dies from malaria in Africa every 30 seconds, that’s why I was happy to be involved in this important project for Sport Relief.”

The designer added, “I”m really proud and excited to have designed a dress for Sport Relief with the serious message of highlighting the power of the humble mosquito net as a lifesaving tool against malaria.”

From the House of Hot Mess

Friday, 12 March, 2010

The world’s favorite bee-hived hot mess, Amy Winehouse, is reportedly collaborating with English label Fred Perry on a clothing line.

Winehouse who used to be known for her incredible music, is creating a 17-piece line that will include twinsets, pencil skirts, capri pants and polo shirts.  The color palate will be mostly black and pink.

Richard Martin, Fred Perry Marketing Director says the pairing is going rather well so far, “We had three major design meetings where she was closely involved in product style selection and the application of fabric, color and styling details.  Amy gave crucial input on proportion, color and fit. The range clearly has Amy’s handwriting.”

The pieces will retail for for $32 to $150 and are set to hit stores in October.

I say, no, no, no!

Jason Wu at the Smithshonian

Wednesday, 10 March, 2010

In keeping with tradition, First Lady Michelle Obama and designer Jason Wu went the Smithsonian on Tuesday to ceremonially hand over her inaugural gown.  The now famous gown will join 11 other dresses worn by former first ladies as part of the exhibit “A First Lady’s Debut.”

The first lady humbly admitted to being a “a little embarrassed by all the fuss made over my dress. Like many of you, I’m not used to people wanting to put things I’ve worn on display.”  She also recalled the inauguration: the cold weather, the energy and the moment she put on the gown saying, ” I remember how just luscious I felt as the President and I were announced onto the stage for the first of many dances. And I’ll cherish that moment for the rest of my life.”

A beautiful moment, a beautiful dress.

Academy Awards Fashion Recap

Monday, 8 March, 2010

The 82nd Annual Academy Awards were held on Sunday night and while the ceremony was all about The Hurt Locker, the red carpet was all about fashion.

For best dressed I choose newly minted Academy Award Winner Sandra Bullock.  Bullock did it all right Sunday night in her gold, beaded Marchesa column gown.  Looking like statue herself, Bullock was poised, elegant and gracious.  Her sleak hair and fushia lip complimented the gown perfectly.  This girl and this gown are winners.

Looking as good in purple as she did in blue, is Zoe Saldana in Givenchy.   The dress is unconventional in cut and color and the perfect risk for Oscar night.  Pretty. Poofy.  Wonderful.

Lastly, I’d like to pay tribute to a young Hollywood starlette who finally found her way from grunge girl to A-list actress.  The navy Monique Lhullier is gorgeous on her fair skin and the makeup is simple and pretty.  She’s almost standing up straight and is that a smile?

Trends on the carpet were gold, silver tones and water color prints.  The makeup was simple and pretty and the bling was toned down in favor of elegant, classic pieces.  The updo ruled the carpet with stars like Jennifer Lopez, Nicole Richie, Saldana and Stewart wearing versions.

Sheldon Brown Gets Down With eModa!

Saturday, 27 February, 2010

Below is the full interview for your reading pleasure.

I went to the eModa.com offices on a particularly cold day in late winter for an interview with Sheldon Brown of the Philadelphia Eagles. The eModa office was much like the player I was about to meet: smaller than I expected and rather unassuming. In the front of the office, several girls flitted around steaming and pulling clothing for the shoot. Just back the hall, past the writers and programmers behind the scenes of a multi-million dollar online retailer, Brown was wrapping up a photo shoot.

The shoot moves to a bar across the street and Brown and I get to the interview portion while the photographer, stylist and staff regroup. Brown is not what you’d imagine a million-dollar NFL player to be: he is quiet and mild mannered and anything but intimidating. He has a touch of that Southern drawl and fits as easily into the background of the bar as he does in front of the camera. It’s hard to imagine that this is the same man famous for a massive hit on Reggie Bush in the 2006 NFC Championship game.

Sheldon Brown attributes his stellar attendance record (he hasn’t missed a football game since the sixth grade) to his work ethic and to god’s diligence in watching over him. Of his famous hit on Reggie Bush in the 2006 NFC Championship game Brown says, “It’s an adrenaline rush you definitely feel the effect throughout the stadium. It’s an emotional lift for your team because you physically sent a message to the other team announcing domination.” Beyond this particular hit, Brown’s reputation is as a hard-working player who quietly makes an impact. Unimpressed by the accolades and endorsements, he is content earning the respect of his teammates and peers.

Brown’s easy demeanor is shaped by his upbringing in South Carolina. His southern roots permeate his conversations and have a great deal to do with his inspirations and his aspirations after football. Even as we sit here, Brown is under the watchful eye of a friend from home in town only long enough to pack Brown up to fly south for the off-season. It becomes immediately obvious that there is some place they would both rather be.

Having already done a great deal to improve the football program at his high school alma mater, Brown’s ultimate goal is to return as a coach. Without his home town, Brown believes, he wouldn’t be where he is today. During each game, Brown thinks of his coaches and his home, playing for an entire community where a neighbor might whip you for being out of line just as your own mother would.

When asked about mentors and the responsibility of athletes as role models, Brown states that while they do have an obligation to kids who look up to them, they are not parents. The role of teaching and mentorship really belongs to parents. After all, someone’s got to be in charge in the off-season.

Brown’s role model is his father. A man he remembers racing and playing one-on-one with in the backyard. It was somewhere around the age of 12 or 13 that Brown beat his dad in a race. With that victory it became obvious that he was a special athlete.

Brown looks forward to returning to South Carolina and coaching and mentoring, but won’t do so until he puts away his pads for good. As he does on the field, he won’t commit unless he can give 100%. His contract may be in Philadelphia, but his heart is in Dixie.

And while speaking of Philly, I thought it only fair to ask Brown what it’s like to play here in front of fans legendary for their passion and, well, disrespect. Brown loves playing for the Birds and appreciates the fans for their honesty. With Philly fans, he says you always know where you stand, they let you know when you’re doing well and they let you know when you’re not.”

Brown is acutely aware of the strangeness of celebrity and fan admiration and keeps it all in perspective. The fans, the endorsements, even today’s shoot are all part of that game. A game he enjoys to an extent.

As it happens, Brown love clothes, especially those that are custom fit. For him, “there’s no better feeling.” One of the perks of building a home was having the luxury of creating a closet large enough to house his rather extensive wardrobe. When he’s out and about or doing a public appearance, you might see Brown in a fresh pair of True Religion or Monarchy jeans, a designer tee, sport coat and Louis Vuitton tennis shoes. The sport coat, Brown casually explains, comes off when feeling casual and goes on to add a touch of class.

Observing Brown during his shoot, he appears relatively comfortable posing with a model or alone in front of some lights holding a football or leaning across a bar. He seems in control and aware, perhaps recognizing that this is all part of a game that will allow him the means to return home where he’ll enter a second phase of his life as coach, mentor and country boy.

Victoria Beckham Fall 2010

Monday, 15 February, 2010

Victoria Beckham’s Fall 2010 line has debuted to strong reviews.

Her signature structured style has been rounded out a bit with some looser draping and softer silhouettes.  The color palette ranged from neutral to dark with a few prints.  Each piece beautifully accentuates the female figure and is marked by Beckham’s attention to detail and obvious knowledge of the craft.  By doing her homework and respecting the art of the industry, she has successfully avoided the pitfalls of “celebrity designer.”

Congrats to Beckham on a line that is relevent, stylish and all around posh.

The Iconic Flasher

Thursday, 11 February, 2010

Way before pop-tarts and B-list celebrities were doing it, Marilyn Monroe was flashing her panties in public.

The iconic image of Monroe atop a subway gate that has inspired generations of men, Halloween costumes and tattoos is now being used for fashion inspiration.

Protec-Style Lingerie is producing Marilyn panty in beige, white and black.  The garments will be made of patented Mystex fabric that’s absorbent, stain resistant, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and antiviral.

Sounds more sterile than sexy.

Snooki: Before and After

Monday, 8 February, 2010

Inside Edition recently gave everyone’s favorite Jersey Girl a makeover.

The poof was deflated, the tan faded and the girls were covered up (almost).  Snooki says her new look made her feel like a “grandma,” but the toned-down (natural) approach actually revealed a pretty, petite lady.

Maybe there is life after the Jersey Shore…

The State of The First Lady

Thursday, 28 January, 2010

President Obama delivered his State of the Union Address last night amid great scrutiny and uncertainty.  What was certain, in fact, what has remained certain for his first year in office is First Lady Michelle Obama’s budding status as a fashion icon.

Last night Mrs. Obama wore a long-sleeved wine and plum colored dress by Isaac Mizrahi.  ABC News speculated that many of the evenings important attendees would wear shades of purple in an effort to suggest that bipartisanship (red + blue = purple) is the only way to heal an ailing nation.

Your T-shirt’s on Fire?

Tuesday, 19 January, 2010

Nashville foursome, Kings of Leon, is producing a line of high-end tees, denim and jackets for Surface2Air in (Paris) and S2A x KOL here in the US.  The price tag on a t-shirt is rumored around $100, denim will fetch close to $200 and for a mere $1150, you can wear a bomber jacket just like frontman Caleb Followill.

In times when even hipsters keep their wallet chains tightly clipped, just how much are we willing to pay to look like a rockstar?

Kanye still Keeps his G-Shock on his Wrist do you??

The Fashionable Costume

Wednesday, 28 October, 2009

Ah, yes, Halloween.  The one day a year when seemingly sweet and innocent girls give way to their inner wild child and morph into skanky fairy tale princesses (Little Red Riding Ho, Sinderella, etc.), naughty cops and medieval wenches.  This year, I’m helping you embrace your innermost desires with three last minute “fashionable” costumes. As you make your choices, consider this: I will be asking my readers to submit a photo of their fashion inspired costumes for judging.  The top 5 costumes will receive an eModa coupon code for 25% off and have their photo posted on my blog for the entire world to see.

Lindsay Lohan

She’s been in more leggings than movies. So many, in fact, she has her own line!  To achieve the perfect Lindsay, pair black leggings with boots and an oversized tee.  A vest or leather riding jacket is also appropriate.  You’ll need another long blonde wig (preferably one that can be curled to achieve Lindsay’s wavy spirals), a can of Redbull, a pack of cigarettes, an oversized bag and a scowl to complete this look.  (A spray tan is also a nice touch.)

*Extra points if you manage to snuggle up to a female DJ at some point during the holiday.

Shop eModa: Factory Girl Bruce Lee Leggings in Black, Lauren Moshi Skull Tank Swing in Black, Holy G Sequin Vest in Black, Holy G Vest with Buttons in Gray, Monarchy Collection Moto Leather Jacket in Black, Monarchy Collection Denim Moto Jacket in Black, Diesel Time 10 Ankle Boots, Rebecca Minkoff Supernova Stud Nikkie Hobo, Gustto Balna Hobo Bag, Gustto Sophia Bag

Lindssay Lohan Leggings

Beyonce

Beyonce is the very definition of diva.  As such, confidence is crucial with this costume.  Hair must be long, luscious, cascading curls; the bigger the better.  If you’re daring, go for a sparkly leotard (long sleeves) with shimmering, neutral toned tights. If you’re not so daring, try a mini-dress.  You can do a simple pump or something fierce and big hoops with either look.  The robot claw makes the costume, so if you don’t happen to have an extra one lying around, find a long, black glove (wrist length, satin) and embellish it with shells, beads, sequins and spray paint (nail polish will also work on a smaller area).  The goal is to make it look like her video claw, so aim for chunky and mechanical looking (think armadillo).  Don’t be afraid to go overboard with the makeup; liner and shimmer shadow with extravagant lashes will work well.  An all-over shimmer lotion is great for the face, neck and chest.

*Extra points if you can command a crowd to join you in a rendition of Single Ladies.

Shop eModa: Salvage Dark Element Dress in Black, Salvage Haute Dress in Black/Rich Blue, LAMB Shoes Faith, Rock and Republic Athena Heels in Black Patent

Beyonce Single Ladies

Lady Gaga

I anticipate a great many Lady Gaga’s this Halloween, but if you’ve got imagination to spare, there’s no reason why yours can’t be unique.  Lady Gaga is nothing without her high-cut leotard.  Pair it with bright colored tights (or colored fish-nets) and thigh-high leather boots.  If you can pull it off, her signature hair bow is the way to go.  If you’re dexterously challenged in the hair department, opt instead for a blonde bob with severe angles (think Anna Wintour) or another long poker straight (pun intended) wig.  For the crafty costumer, spray lace doilies, attach an elastic band and cut eye holes to create a mask.  Locate a top hat and go to town with lace, feathers, sequins and glitter (playing cards are a nice kitschy touch).  The mask and hat are where you have the most creative freedom, so ask yourself while crafting, “What would Lady Gaga do (WWLGD)?”  Elbow length gloves and big, dark sunglasses and a Disco Stick (you’re on your own with that one) complete the look.

*Extra points if you can snag Alexander Skarsgard as your escort.

Shop eModa: Sheiki Spunky Leggings in Magenta, Factory Girl Cheetah Tights with Zips, Rock and Republic Eagle Sunglasses in Black

Lady Gaga at the 2009 MTV VMA's

Halloween is first and foremost a celebratory time of fun and fantasy, but safety should always be considered.  Party in groups, don’t leave your drinks unattended and always, always designate a safe driver.

Happy Halloween, my ghouls and Gaga’s; I look forward to seeing your “fashionable” costumes!

(To be considered for judging, all pictures must be received at lel@emoda.com by Friday, November 6, 2009.  Please be sure to tell me who you dressed up as, your name and your location.  Winners will be notified by email.)
