Does anyone still want their MTV?

Monday, 7 June, 2010

The MTV Movie Awards aired last night and though I am admittedly no longer in the MTV demographic, I think it’s fair to say that the network and their awards shows have gone in steep downhill direction in recent years.  The over-scripted jokes delivered by over-acting celebrities induce more cringes than laughs.  A camera panning the audience will find anything from utter bemusement to total boredom.  Well, at least we still have the fashion.

Some highlights:

Kristen Stewart striking an (almost) confident pose in a belted mini that is fast becoming her signature style.  Look for more of these as the Eclipse media onslaught kicks into high gear in the coming weeks.

Scarlett Johnasson mastering sexy demure in a belted green Dolce & Gabbana.  Johansson also played part in one of the evenings only funny bits with Sandra Bullock.

Whitney Port keeping it edgy and light in yellow and tan.   Of all the Hills/City girls, Port seems to be the one with a true sense of style.

Not So Uniform

Thursday, 3 June, 2010

If you’ve ever worked at a minimum wage job or busted your butt for tips, the word uniformlikely makes you cringe.  (I once donned a navy pencil shirt, Dickie and blazer complete with shoulder pads–before they made a fashionable return.) Aside from making staff look like drones, uniforms are usually ill-fitting and poorly constructed.  Not so for the staff of Thompson Hotel properties.

Nanette Lepore has designed some very sexy uniforms for staff at three of the Thompson lounges and bars.   Outdoor cocktail waitresses will be working it in body-hugging uniforms (see below sketch) at LES in NYC, Donovan House in Washington and the Tropicana Pool at LA’s Hollywood Roosevelt.

Sure beats the shoulder pads!

Hemming and Aweing

Friday, 28 May, 2010

The days of unwittingly flashing your everything when getting out the car and struggling to retrieve something you’ve dropped without creating a scene are at an end: longer hemlines are back!  (Oh happy day!)

What was once reserved for dowdy ladies attending afternoon tea, is in the midst of a fashionable revival thanks to Marc Jacobs’ recent Luis Vuitton designs.  Unlike the mini skirt, this  hemline which falls mid-calf, is wearer friendly and creates a universally flattering retro-feminine silhouette.

To keep it youthful, find bright colors and flirty prints and avoid the frumpy by focusings on definitive waists and a voluninous skirt.

Sneaky Summer Look

Wednesday, 26 May, 2010

Let’s be honest, sometimes the summer heat gets us too hot under the collar to worry about killer shoes.  How about sparing your dogs some pain and still looking cute?  It’s possible.  Here’s how.

Instead of pairing your favorite summer dress with heels, wedges or even strappy sandals, throw on a pair of sneakers.  Chucks are universally wearable, but you can also opt for something more daring like what’s below.  (Yes, I know these are men’s sneakers, but if the shoe fits…)

Sneakers and a casual dress or romper are perfect for a summer day spent shopping, site seeeing, lounging or lunching.  So go on, be sneaky!

The Best choice for a first date outfit

Monday, 17 May, 2010

First dates always make one nervous. You excited to meet this guy and you are so glad that he asked you out, finally! Yes, that is all wonderful, what should you wear? The little-black-dress option is so passé. You might it is safe and that everyone thinks you look great in it. But well, we think it is boring. First dates are all about the exciting possibilities and new beginnings and well you sure don’t want to look like you are dressed for a funeral. Here are a few ideas about what you should be wearing.

Sexy jeans and a super-sexy tee – Yes, you might think pants would be a little too casual, but it need not always be. You could team a chic pair of True Religion jeans with vibrant tee to pull of smart city-girl look. You could add a scarf of the ensemble to add a bohemian touch to your look. Complete the look with some sexy heels for the uber glam doll look. This is perfect for a movie date or a dinner at the new and happening bistro. You look young, full of life and totally comfortable in your own skin.

If you are not too keen to go the jeans way and want to dress up a little bit more, you could opt for the dress. Not a boring black dress though. Keep it short and flowy. Patterns are the flavor of this season and we think they are really hot. Go for pastels or breezy aqua colors to glow in the candlelight. You could opt for trendy flats if you are tall or comfortable in flats or you could go for the classic pumps if you are petite and want to add some height and show off those amazing legs.

It is all about color and accessorising right this season. Bags, shoes, scarfs, they all complete the look that you are sought after. Adding bows and chunky bangles and wearing lots of necklaces and beads is also quite a rage among women today. Remember to mix and match and experiment with colours, wearing everything of the same color is the biggest faux pas one could ever make.

If you are however not too sure about how to pull off this look, keep it minimalistic. Be confident about what you wear and do not be afraid to make a bold statement. Style is only an extension to one’s personality.

‘Dress’ your way to your man’s heart

Tuesday, 11 May, 2010

Is the romance in your relationship fading? The same guy who used to take you out every night is now suddenly more interested to spend time with his male cronies, is it? It probably happened gradually and you didn’t even notice when he went from not getting enough of you to needing some time out. While there could be other reasons, more often than not the reason is that he is getting too used to you. So, how do you pique his interest again and keep the romance alive? All you got to do is remind him of the sexy siren you were before you guys starting dating and remind him again of why he fell for you.

We know that jeans and an old tee are really comfortable and you might think who dresses up more than that for a movie date? Well, you got to pull up your socks if want to keep your guy. Dresses are the thing. Men love it when women bare some skin. We are talking about short, feminine and flowy dresses here that bare some legs, those legs that make your guy want to show you off around the town.

It need not be elaborate or really expensive. There are some really nice and affordable dresses available if you know where to look. It is all about being glamorous and in style, girls. Yes, we all want men to fall in love with the kind of person we are, but really can we get a little more practical around here? It is however not just about your guy, looking pretty and attractive will do wonders for your ego as well and make your guy realize how lucky he is and that he has got competition. He wouldn’t take you for granted again.

Even at a formal do, the LBD might not be the best pick. Don’t play so safe, you are young! Experiment with the bright colors and the new cuts and styles to keep the mystery alive.

And for those informal parties and dates experiment with patterns and revel in your feminine look that will have all the guys falling all over themselves to open the door for you. Have a colorful and vibrant wardrobe with sexy, quirky dresses and don’t be afraid to bare some skin.

Dresses are something that never go out of fashion. So, you need not feel guilty about splurging on that perfect dress that you had to have. Enjoy and flaunt your looks, because you are young only once!

The Met Gala Fashion Recap

Tuesday, 4 May, 2010

Last night The Metropolitan Museum Costume  Institute held a gala was to celebrate the opening of the new exhibit American Woman: Fashioning a National Identity.  The exhibit runs through August 15 and will explore “developing perceptions of the modern American woman from 1890 to 1940 and how they have affected the way American women are seen today.”  The study will focus on American femininity as expressed through clothing and how changes in style have affected women’s liberation and progress in society and politics.

Naturally, the event drew a slew of fashionable women.  A few of our favorites:

Camilla Bell in Jason Wu

Gwen Stefani in LAMB with Gavin Rossdale

Kerry Washington in Thakoon for Gap

Kate Hudson in Casadei

BIO: Murderous at times. Like when the jeans don’t fit

Tuesday, 4 May, 2010

“NOOOOOOOOO…..!!! The jeans don’t fit!”

“Honey, they look perfect…”

“You’re the boyfriend. You are ‘supposed’ to say that. Look at that gap at the back. I’m going to look like I have a hunch on my ass.”

Maybe it’s not so bad. May be you could cover it up with a long enough t-shirt. May be a gap in the waistband would be the next fashion trend….in 2090! Don’t listen to your patronizing girlfriends or I’ll-just-stay-out-of-trouble boyfriends ladies! Your jeans have to fit your waist exactly, your crotch shouldn’t have any lines, your thighs shouldn’t look like they’re going to pop out at the hips and your butt…(cough) touchy topic! We are all different women, we all have different bodies and we all want perfectly fit jeans. And jeans, well jeans are made in a machine…

Truth of the matter is, jeans are not made for the I’ve-been-cut-out-of-rock models or celebrities with $1000/hour charging personal trainers. There is a pair of jeans for every girl out there. Yes, you knew I was going to say that. I’m going to say it again. There is a pair of jeans for every girl out there…in every brand. It’s just a matter of choosing.

Splendidly big-butted Kim Kardashian named Siwy Jeans as her favorite brand in her blog because they guarantee perfect fit and are incredibly stylish.

There are several different variations in each size that is the secret to choosing your jeans. And these sizes sometimes differ by brand, sometimes by material and make. Now don’t run down to the store, rummage every pair available and camp out in the trial room. You can still buy your jeans online and not yell ‘fowl’ when you receive them. There is a fit guide in the eModa store which is pretty much comprehensive and more often than not ‘nails it’.

Predicting a Trend: SATC 2

Tuesday, 27 April, 2010
The ladies from Sex and the City have provided us with years worth of insight into fashion and spawned trends like nameplate necklaces, sky-high stilettos and oversized flower pins.  But what type of trends will this summer’s SATC 2 put on the streets?

If you’ve seen the trailer’s (and I trust you have), you know the ladies take their fabulousness out of NYC and to the sandy desert.  Based on the trailer and the (scant) details we’re acquired thus far, here are a few things we think will be trending this summer and into the fall:

1. Scarves: Not just for grandma’s and cold weather, scarves are about to hit the fashion big time.  Go for color and wrap yours over your head and tie at the nape of the neck or around the front of your forehead (headband/bandeau style).  And if you happen to be in a convertible (or on a camel), don’t be afraid to channel Jackie O.

2. Long, feminine dresses: Ranging from floral to hippie-chic to luxury maxi’s in metallics, dresses are definitely in.  They work well with an embellished flat or strappy sandal and are the perfect way to beat the heat without sacrificing the fashion.

Josh Brody Maxi-Sleeveless

3. Shoe, shoes, shoes:In the series and in the first film, Ms. Bradshaw solidified what many of us already knew: it’s all about the shoes!  It looks like the ladies will continue their shoe game in the second film.  Invest in the staples like  classic black and nude pumps and permit yourself the luxury of buying a statement shoes to build an outfit around.

Rock & Republic Pandora Chain Sandal

4. Fun, fearless females:  The journey the ladies take in SATC 2 seems to be all about embracing life and being fearless, fun and female; something that never truly goes out of style.

Miranda, Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte

Also look out for all the subtle trends the film is keeping under wraps (like the iPhone cameo in the first film).

You gotta love the patterns this spring!

Thursday, 15 April, 2010
Ok ladies, spring is here. Time to roll some sleeves, bare some legs and bring out the shades. Spring is about the dresses and so is summer which is on the way. Flowy, flowery, breezy, dressy…there is no limit to the range of women’s dresses out there! Women do realize that, but what you choose to make a statement doesn’t depend on the brand or the price. It’s the first look that matters, everything else comes later. But yeah, no need to go for the bullhorn look, all glam and shine and boobs and legs. Because you can’t do that everyday and not come out with a different personality profile than yours, you know what I mean. The original urban chic is cool and confident, casual, fun loving and elegant. One way to make a difference to your wardrobe this season is to try out patterns. You don’t have to be a hippie to sport patterns, trust me on that. If you can’t, trust Rachel. The Friends character had an awesome wardrobe with contemporary but elegantly patterned clothes. We can still borrow some of her dress sense. Do you remember her strapless LBD, plain as an LBD can get but with a tiny embroidered pattern on the bosom?
Patterns are the answer to the ‘first look’ question we had before. Patterns look unique, patterns complement your personality and they provide that vibrant detail—subtle but impossible not to notice. Colors are many. There’s a whole spectrum out there on the clothes. Unless you want to make scarlet your second skin, you cannot be sure to make a difference with colors. But with patterns, it’s win-win—of course, depending on your choice.

And there is no better platform for patterns than spring! New designers are finding their niche in patterns. Check out this Josh Brody dress. They say there is a dress for every occasion. But this chic little outfit can suit any occasion—as long as we are not talking about funerals, that is! Hanging out with friends, the beach party, going shopping, Fridays at the office…just the kind that would brighten up any room!

Another trend this season is the loose dresses that fit at the neck or shoulders only. Check out this piece by Classique. It is ‘the’ look for any casual occasion. Pair it up with leggings or with calf length boots in suede or black and you know you got a killer outfit!

You can also try out plaid if you are not too comfortable with the patterns. Here’s one such look from the emoda store.

Kate Moss Looking Good and Doing Good

Tuesday, 16 March, 2010

Supermodel Kate Moss is doing her part to prevent and treat malaria.  Moss modeled a William Tempest corseted dress made of recycled malaria nets for UK group Sport Relief 2010.

Malaria is a mosquito-borne infectious disease found in tropical and subtropical regions that kills between one and three million people each year.  Malara is preventable and treatable.  The insecticide-treated mosquito net is one of the easiest and most cost-effective ways to combat the spread of malaria.

Commenting on her role in the efforts Moss stated,”‘I was shocked to hear that one child dies from malaria in Africa every 30 seconds, that’s why I was happy to be involved in this important project for Sport Relief.”

The designer added, “I”m really proud and excited to have designed a dress for Sport Relief with the serious message of highlighting the power of the humble mosquito net as a lifesaving tool against malaria.”

Urban Weddings

Wednesday, 10 March, 2010

Philadelphia based, Urban Outfitters has announced that it will be launching a wedding brand in Spring 2011.  The brand, most known for it’s simple, chic hippie inspired fashions, will include wedding dresses, bridesmaids gowns, jewelry and accessories.

Co-president Wendy B. McDevitt says the Urban aesthetic is appealing to brides-to-be and believes that there is a demand for “a certain product edit that only we can provide.”

Prices for a wedding gown are said to range from $750-$5,000.  The collection will be available online and in select US stores.

Jason Wu at the Smithshonian

Wednesday, 10 March, 2010

In keeping with tradition, First Lady Michelle Obama and designer Jason Wu went the Smithsonian on Tuesday to ceremonially hand over her inaugural gown.  The now famous gown will join 11 other dresses worn by former first ladies as part of the exhibit “A First Lady’s Debut.”

The first lady humbly admitted to being a “a little embarrassed by all the fuss made over my dress. Like many of you, I’m not used to people wanting to put things I’ve worn on display.”  She also recalled the inauguration: the cold weather, the energy and the moment she put on the gown saying, ” I remember how just luscious I felt as the President and I were announced onto the stage for the first of many dances. And I’ll cherish that moment for the rest of my life.”

A beautiful moment, a beautiful dress.

Academy Awards Fashion Recap

Monday, 8 March, 2010

The 82nd Annual Academy Awards were held on Sunday night and while the ceremony was all about The Hurt Locker, the red carpet was all about fashion.

For best dressed I choose newly minted Academy Award Winner Sandra Bullock.  Bullock did it all right Sunday night in her gold, beaded Marchesa column gown.  Looking like statue herself, Bullock was poised, elegant and gracious.  Her sleak hair and fushia lip complimented the gown perfectly.  This girl and this gown are winners.

Looking as good in purple as she did in blue, is Zoe Saldana in Givenchy.   The dress is unconventional in cut and color and the perfect risk for Oscar night.  Pretty. Poofy.  Wonderful.

Lastly, I’d like to pay tribute to a young Hollywood starlette who finally found her way from grunge girl to A-list actress.  The navy Monique Lhullier is gorgeous on her fair skin and the makeup is simple and pretty.  She’s almost standing up straight and is that a smile?

Trends on the carpet were gold, silver tones and water color prints.  The makeup was simple and pretty and the bling was toned down in favor of elegant, classic pieces.  The updo ruled the carpet with stars like Jennifer Lopez, Nicole Richie, Saldana and Stewart wearing versions.
