Time for Men to Shape Up

Monday, 31 May, 2010

The playing field is getting a bit more level: Spanx for men are selling like hot cakes (and they work to hide that paunch grown out of hot cake consumption).

Jimmy Kimmel has broached the subject on his show and Steve Carell hinted at wearing an early sample of the men’s T-shirt during an interview at the Golden Globes, but all jokes aside, real men are shaping up and retailers are taking note.

Nick Wooster, men’s fashion director at Neiman Marcus says, “We are selling them as quickly as Spanx can make them. Men may not be talking about it, but they’re buying it.”  Sales so far seem to be more substantial online where a self-conscious man can shop with anonymity.

In addition to popular paunch smoothing T-shirts, brands are producing profile-enhancing underwear.  Profile enhancing underwear are the equivalent of the push-up bra.   (Is that Spanx you’re wearing or are you just happy to see me?)

The founder of Spanx, Sara Blakely, is quick to explain that her products are not for weight loss and not aimed at beer bellies and muffin tops, but for anyone trying to smooth over small problem areas.  She sites the perpetually slim and fit (size 2) Gwyneth Paltrow as a client and fan.

The problem with all these smoke and mirrors is that when it comes time to strip of our Spanx, we may all be in for a shock.  As comedian Wanday Sykes explains, “It’s so funny that when you take them off you just become a blob. You look in the mirror, and it’s like, hey, now I’m an amoeba.”  At least now they’re will be two amoeba’s…

AFTER

Hemming and Aweing

Friday, 28 May, 2010

The days of unwittingly flashing your everything when getting out the car and struggling to retrieve something you’ve dropped without creating a scene are at an end: longer hemlines are back!  (Oh happy day!)

What was once reserved for dowdy ladies attending afternoon tea, is in the midst of a fashionable revival thanks to Marc Jacobs’ recent Luis Vuitton designs.  Unlike the mini skirt, this  hemline which falls mid-calf, is wearer friendly and creates a universally flattering retro-feminine silhouette.

To keep it youthful, find bright colors and flirty prints and avoid the frumpy by focusings on definitive waists and a voluninous skirt.

Happy Birthday and Thanks for the Support!

Thursday, 27 May, 2010

Regretfully, I neglected to wish a very happy 100th birthday to the bra yesterday.  To mark the milestone and give thanks for a century of support, let’s take a moment to appreciate the bra’s humble beginnings.

Bras, officially known as brassieres, have been used throughout history to cover, restrain and shape womens’ breasts.  Bra-like undergarments were depicted on female athletes as far back as the seventh century BCE (Minoan ear).  The first historical reference to brassieres may come from India during the rule of king Harshavardhana (1st Century CE).  In China, a rudimentary bra was made from two cups, a piece of cloth and shoulder straps that connected to a rear seam that also sucked in the stomach.

By the 16th century, the bra had gained some renowned in the states and was worn by wealthy women in the form of corsets.  Cosets became girdles in the latter part of the 19th century and the bra as we know it emerged in the early 20th century with commerical production reaching prominance in the 1930′s.

Credit for the invention of the modern day bra usually is shared.  In 1859,  Henry S. Lesher of Brooklyn, New York  patented a devise meant to give “symmetrical rotundity” to the wearer.  Luman L. Chapman of Camden, New Jersey patented a “corset substitute” in 1863.  In 1876 a dressmaker named Olivia Flynt was granted four patents for her “true Corset” or “Flynt Waist” which was marketed toward well-endowed woman.  The Flynt garments saw great success because they were thought to be more hygienic than previous models.  A frenchwoman, Herminie Cadolle, also stakes a claim as the inventor of the modern bra in 1889 (she called it  le bien-etre, or the well-being).

In our time, bras have gone from functional to fashionable.  The billion dollar business has everyone from Hanes to Victoria’s Secret branding their products as revolutionary in support, shape, style and comfort.

Sneaky Summer Look

Wednesday, 26 May, 2010

Let’s be honest, sometimes the summer heat gets us too hot under the collar to worry about killer shoes.  How about sparing your dogs some pain and still looking cute?  It’s possible.  Here’s how.

Instead of pairing your favorite summer dress with heels, wedges or even strappy sandals, throw on a pair of sneakers.  Chucks are universally wearable, but you can also opt for something more daring like what’s below.  (Yes, I know these are men’s sneakers, but if the shoe fits…)

Sneakers and a casual dress or romper are perfect for a summer day spent shopping, site seeeing, lounging or lunching.  So go on, be sneaky!

Yes you Cannes!

Tuesday, 18 May, 2010

The Canne’s film festival is in full swing in the South of France. To truly appreciate something, you must first understand it’s history. Allow me…

The Cannes Film Festival was founded in 1946 and is the world’s oldest and most prestigious film festival.  This year marks the 63rd year.  The films are screened and judged by a panel (jury) for prizes like Grand Prix (Grand Prize), Prix du Jury (Jury Prize), Palm d’or du court metrage (Best Short Film) and so on.  Winning at Canne is a sure-fire way to find a distributor and market your film stateside.  This year’s jury is headed by American director, Tim Burton.

But enough history, bring on the fashion!

One Woman’s Trash…

Friday, 14 May, 2010

Christian Louboutin has had enough!  Enough of counterfeiters that is.  The brand has announced that aggressive legal action will be taken to stop counterfeiters who profit from the sale of faux Louboutin’s.  The company launched Stop Fake Louboutin to help educate consumers on websites that sell fake luxury goods and what actions may be taken against them.  The company is so serious about this pursuit that they’ve posted video of knockoff shoes being bulldozed (http://www.stopfakelouboutin.com/index.php/en).

While defending your good name and the authenticity of a product is certainly expected, this kind of destruction strikes me as wasteful.  The more charitable (and news worthy) alternative would be to donate the pieces to the numerous nonprofits and shelters striving to help women survive adversity by providing clothing and shoes for job interviews and outings.  Perhaps getting these women back on their feet in some faux Louboutin’s gives them the opportunity to walk around in a real pair someday…

From Patio to Purse

Thursday, 13 May, 2010

When someone says “wicker” to me I picture patio furniture, an overdone floral living room at Grandma’s house and a Nicholas Cage movie, but wicker is about to become fashionable.

Diane Kruger, who convincingly played the most beautiful woman in history (Helen of Troy), was recently spotted in France carrying a basket purse.  Basket purse?  Yes, Kruger completed her chic (Chanel Spring 2010) look by carrying her lady things in an actual basket.  (A trend is born!)

If you simply cannot avoid cliched images of picnics and fairy tales when carrying a basket, try Straw Studios Wicker Tube Clutch ($46).

Let’s get Rolling

Wednesday, 12 May, 2010

I have to admit that when Katie Holmes first started rolling up her boyfriend jeans I was not a fan.  I feared it would be just another trend that everyone would try and few would pull off (leggings).  But, despite my initial hesitations, the look has taken off and is fast becoming summer’s easiest and most versatile trend.

What makes this look so senstational is that it gives new life to those boycut pants we’ve stashed in the back of our closet in favor of the skinny jeans.  It’s also one of the most versatile looks to hit the masses in years. With just a  few quick rolls, you’ve got at least three options: sexy (with a sleek tank top and pumps or heeled sandals), relaxed (with a band tee and some converse) and perfectly casual (in a simple tee, flats and a fedora).

That’s one pair of pants and at least three go-to styles that can easily take you from date to concert to the beach.  Just keep your footwear on point and make sure your pants are still a good fit, otherwise your look will be more sloppy than stylish.

Summer Reading

Monday, 10 May, 2010

For many readers, summer is a time to put away the textbooks, political memoirs and book club brain crushers and kick back with some lighter pulp.  Two suggestions for your warm weather leisure time:

Sex and the City 2: The Official Companion Book ($14):  If you watched the series,  loved the first movie, are dying to see the second (mark your calendars, May 27) and absolutely obsessed with the fashion, this is a must read.  The 500 pager offers insight and wardrobe notes into the fashions worn by your Carrie, Miranda, Charlotte and Samantha and some behind-the-scenes photos from the set.

Style, Naturally: The Savvy Shopping Guide to Sustainable Fashion and Beauty ($10): Summer Rayne Oakes sets out to help you blend your sense of fashion with an eco-conscious sensibility by explaining the basics of fair trade and sustainability as they relate to the clothes we wear.  She also introduces the reader to like-minded fashionistas like Stella McCartney, Levi’s, Edun and others.

Slip on that sundress, your strappy sandals and sunscreen and get to reading!

World Peace and Fishnets

Monday, 10 May, 2010

Promo shots for this weekends Miss USA pagent have been released and are under fire for their racy content.

From the looks of things, Miss USA , once a celebration of the nations most wholesome beauties, has shifted gears in favor of the lingerie, fishnets, heavy eye-liner and bedhead so prominent in men’s magazines.  Despite the public outcry, pageant officials are defending the shots calling them “hot, yet tasteful.”  (Isn’t that what infamous pageant queen Carrie Prejean said about her own racy photos and solo sex tape?)

It’s been reported that several contestants voiced concern over how the wardbrobe would affect their image, but consented for fear they wouldn’t be considered contenders without them.

I worry about how these shots might influence the talent portion of the competition…

The Met Gala Fashion Recap

Tuesday, 4 May, 2010

Last night The Metropolitan Museum Costume  Institute held a gala was to celebrate the opening of the new exhibit American Woman: Fashioning a National Identity.  The exhibit runs through August 15 and will explore “developing perceptions of the modern American woman from 1890 to 1940 and how they have affected the way American women are seen today.”  The study will focus on American femininity as expressed through clothing and how changes in style have affected women’s liberation and progress in society and politics.

Naturally, the event drew a slew of fashionable women.  A few of our favorites:

The ladies in Hollywood are breaking out their stems and looking good.

Gwyneth Paltrow is making the rounds promoting her new flick Iron Man 2 looking effortlessly glam (as usual).  Here she is at the premiere in a gold Giorgio Armani jacquard shorts suit, Chopard jewels, Christian Louboutin clutch and Gianvito Rossi booties.

And while you may not be a fan of GOOP, it’s hard to deny that her obsession with cleansing and fitness does a body good!

Amanda Seyfried of Mama Mia fame donned a similar outfit (but in black) at the Tribeca Film Festival.  Seyfried (below) in Viktor & Rolf shorts and blazer and matching Roger Vivier shoes looks sexy yet smart.   Like Paltrow, Seyfried is meticulous with her diet (she details the pangs of eating raw in Esquire magazine).

Dare we say a (fashion) star on the rise?

Predicting a Trend: SATC 2

Tuesday, 27 April, 2010
The ladies from Sex and the City have provided us with years worth of insight into fashion and spawned trends like nameplate necklaces, sky-high stilettos and oversized flower pins.  But what type of trends will this summer’s SATC 2 put on the streets?

If you’ve seen the trailer’s (and I trust you have), you know the ladies take their fabulousness out of NYC and to the sandy desert.  Based on the trailer and the (scant) details we’re acquired thus far, here are a few things we think will be trending this summer and into the fall:

1. Scarves: Not just for grandma’s and cold weather, scarves are about to hit the fashion big time.  Go for color and wrap yours over your head and tie at the nape of the neck or around the front of your forehead (headband/bandeau style).  And if you happen to be in a convertible (or on a camel), don’t be afraid to channel Jackie O.

2. Long, feminine dresses: Ranging from floral to hippie-chic to luxury maxi’s in metallics, dresses are definitely in.  They work well with an embellished flat or strappy sandal and are the perfect way to beat the heat without sacrificing the fashion.

Josh Brody Maxi-Sleeveless

3. Shoe, shoes, shoes:In the series and in the first film, Ms. Bradshaw solidified what many of us already knew: it’s all about the shoes!  It looks like the ladies will continue their shoe game in the second film.  Invest in the staples like  classic black and nude pumps and permit yourself the luxury of buying a statement shoes to build an outfit around.

Rock & Republic Pandora Chain Sandal

4. Fun, fearless females:  The journey the ladies take in SATC 2 seems to be all about embracing life and being fearless, fun and female; something that never truly goes out of style.

Miranda, Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte

Also look out for all the subtle trends the film is keeping under wraps (like the iPhone cameo in the first film).

Black Lips: Not just for Goth Girls

Monday, 26 April, 2010
Remember back in high school when you went through that Goth phase (right after preppy and before punk)?  No? Well, break out your diary and refresh yourself because black lips are back. Despite being  paraded down Jason Wu, Rodarte and Dennis Basso Spring 2010 runways, black lips in spring seem like a bit of a conundrum.  But a few cosmetic guru’s swear they’re black pout is sophisticated black pout  not rebellious and self-loathing.
Three Customer Color Specialists, who are known for their custom-blending, based their black lip color in the raisin family so it’s able to match your skin tone by looking cool or warm.  For shinier finish, try Noir Lipgloss.  (You can also use this product over any color to add depth to your lips.)  Noir Sheer Lipstick with traces of burgundy and plum-black gives you a sheer, blackberry stain.
If you’re going to try this trend, experts suggest using a brush or a gloss wand for application (to avoid the harsh lined effect).  Use foundation or concealer around the edge of your lip to hold the color in place.

The famous Southern California music festival, Coachella, was held last weekend.  As usual, it was a mix of celebrities and die-hard music fans all donning their version of what’s fashionable.

A few standout trends:  rompers and jumpers, flat sandals, Victorian and feminine details and free-flowing hippie inspired fashions.   Take notes and shop eModa.com to create your own Coachella inspired look.
