Kelly Cutrone Dishes Advice

Friday, 19 March, 2010

If you’re a follower of fashion or reality TV, you’ve likely heard of Kelly Cutrone.  Cutrone is the powerhouse behind prominent PR firm People’s Revolution who gave MTV’s Lauren Conrad and Whitney Port jobs and some tough love.

Cutrone’s latest TV venture on Bravo, Kell On Earth, centers on the operations of People’s Revolution and gives us a fascinating look at the world before, after and beyond the runway.  Episodes feature frazzled designers, emotionally and professionally incompetent assistants, and best of all, a woman at the top of her game (kicking ass and taking names!).

Cutrone is intimidating, demanding and absolutely terrifying.  She is also ambitious, passionate, kind and nurturing.  She’s the boss you fear and love.  Cutrone’s taken what she’s learned and put it into the book, If You Have to Cry, Go Outside … And Other Things Your Mother Never Told You.  The book is working it’s way up the NY Times Bestseller list and earning praise for its unique approach to life lessons.  It’s the perfect read for today’s modern woman bent on doing things her way.

Tommy Hilfiger Fetches a High Price

Monday, 15 March, 2010

Phillips-Van Heusen Corp. is set to buy Tommy Hilfiger for close to $3 billion dollars.  The deal will create one of the largest clothing companies in the world.

Iconic designer Tommy Hilfiger will continue in his role as principal designer and guide the brand during the transition and into future seasons.  With Hilfiger still at the helm, it is unlikely that retailers and consumers will notice any changes in the brand.

Phillips-Van Heusen, who also owns and markets Calvin Klein, is expected to make another $40 million annually.

Spring 2010 Fashion Trends for Men

Sunday, 14 March, 2010

Mens Designer Clothing
As the men’s fashion market continues to grow, it’s important to note each season’s must try trends.  Build your spring wardrobe with the following:

  1. Men are going back to school this spring with the ivy league- prep trend.  To do this trend right, invest in double-breasted suits, gingham button-downs, plaids, denim shirts, tailored/cuffed trousers and white denim.
  2. Sportswear takes on an urban edge this spring for men.  Pair a scoop-neck microfiber tee or a horizontal striped polo shirt a pair of parachute pants and a Herrington jacket.  This spring trend is all about masculine details like piping and drawstrings.
  3. To combat cool evening air, keep your leather jacket this spring.  Layer it over a scoop-neck tee shirt and cuffed shorts for an on-trend and practical spring look.
  4. For men who dare to dabble in color, try the color-blocking trend this spring.  Found in many of spring’s lightweight sweaters, a solid block of color may be bold red or a neutral like heather gray.  It’s an easy way to incorporate color into your spring wardrobe.
  5. Colored suits are perfectly on-trend for men this spring.  A slim cut trouser pant and jacket in a bold orange or a subtle pastel blue is a daring choice for a fashion forward man.

Don’t be afraid to try something new.  Have confidence and make it your own.

Jason Wu at the Smithshonian

Wednesday, 10 March, 2010

In keeping with tradition, First Lady Michelle Obama and designer Jason Wu went the Smithsonian on Tuesday to ceremonially hand over her inaugural gown.  The now famous gown will join 11 other dresses worn by former first ladies as part of the exhibit “A First Lady’s Debut.”

The first lady humbly admitted to being a “a little embarrassed by all the fuss made over my dress. Like many of you, I’m not used to people wanting to put things I’ve worn on display.”  She also recalled the inauguration: the cold weather, the energy and the moment she put on the gown saying, ” I remember how just luscious I felt as the President and I were announced onto the stage for the first of many dances. And I’ll cherish that moment for the rest of my life.”

A beautiful moment, a beautiful dress.

Power Colors that Made a Big Return to Fashion’s of 2010

Tuesday, 9 March, 2010

It is official the popular colors emerging all over the fashion world are black, grey and white. Black is a power color, white adds some purity and grey shows the grounded side to a person and his or her personality. Hollywood’s hottest males and females, especially favor the colors of black, grey and white, as they stay trendy with perhaps a black leather jacket and a grey scarf to show their sporty dominant side. These types of colors are the latest in designer trends.

We all can agree when choosing these power colors, things really cannot go wrong due to the instant polished look gained when wearing them. It is official the popular colors emerging all over the fashion world are black, grey and white. Although these colors have been a hit for fashion, it appears something has made them the hottest colors this year and keep their strong trend. What is that something that place these 3 colors on top of for fashion this year, the versatility and power they represent! Presenting yourself to the public leaves you to choose a power color and yes, that color is black. Black as always been known to be an authority color, a color of having self-control and power. This is why many times we see people giving a speech or presenting him or herself in a public forum, choose to wear black. Adding a touch of purity with an accessory is always welcome with a solid black dress for the female or a solid grey suit worn by a male.

Brands such as Ben Sherman, Diesel, G-Star, True Religion & Rock & Republic all have many tones of gray, black and white combined with other dark silhouettes for the upcoming seasons. The clothing industry has spun into a palette that stays clean, but edgy. This trend in clothing has brought a new light in designer fashion and brands are taking full advantage.

These colors are a top choice this year because they will match almost anything, which gives simplicity to getting dressed every day. The ability to transform from work to dinner to be tough at times, but wearing the choice of black, grey and white make things less complicated in this trendy clothing fashion. Females have the advantage of taking perhaps a black jacket and adding a standout hue to accent it, such as a wide red tone belt around a tailored jacket. Remember black equals the appearance of slender, so many people choose it if he or she is not feeling so thin that day. For all of the above reasons, we can all see why colors black, white and grey are back and in high demand this year.

Academy Awards Fashion Recap

Monday, 8 March, 2010

The 82nd Annual Academy Awards were held on Sunday night and while the ceremony was all about The Hurt Locker, the red carpet was all about fashion.

For best dressed I choose newly minted Academy Award Winner Sandra Bullock.  Bullock did it all right Sunday night in her gold, beaded Marchesa column gown.  Looking like statue herself, Bullock was poised, elegant and gracious.  Her sleak hair and fushia lip complimented the gown perfectly.  This girl and this gown are winners.

Looking as good in purple as she did in blue, is Zoe Saldana in Givenchy.   The dress is unconventional in cut and color and the perfect risk for Oscar night.  Pretty. Poofy.  Wonderful.

Lastly, I’d like to pay tribute to a young Hollywood starlette who finally found her way from grunge girl to A-list actress.  The navy Monique Lhullier is gorgeous on her fair skin and the makeup is simple and pretty.  She’s almost standing up straight and is that a smile?

Trends on the carpet were gold, silver tones and water color prints.  The makeup was simple and pretty and the bling was toned down in favor of elegant, classic pieces.  The updo ruled the carpet with stars like Jennifer Lopez, Nicole Richie, Saldana and Stewart wearing versions.

Re-Fashion

Wednesday, 3 March, 2010

Though New York Fashion Week is history, there is still much to talk about.  Take for instance the buzz surrounding The Green Shows that featured sustainable and recycled clothing lines.

The Green Shows, sponsored by natural beauty line Weleda, opened this year with a Gary Harvey showcase.  Harvey’s recycled couture line feature gowns made of newspapers, laundry bags and re-worked baseball gear.

Harvey, who previously served as creative director for Dcokers Europe and Levi Strauss says, “Too many garments end up in landfill sites. They are deemed aesthetically redundant and get discarded at the end of the season when there are often years of wear left.”

While a newsprint dress may not be your style, encouraging sustainability in an industry that generates massive amounts of waste simply by its ever-changing nature is essential.

Victoria Beckham Fall 2010

Monday, 15 February, 2010

Victoria Beckham’s Fall 2010 line has debuted to strong reviews.

Her signature structured style has been rounded out a bit with some looser draping and softer silhouettes.  The color palette ranged from neutral to dark with a few prints.  Each piece beautifully accentuates the female figure and is marked by Beckham’s attention to detail and obvious knowledge of the craft.  By doing her homework and respecting the art of the industry, she has successfully avoided the pitfalls of “celebrity designer.”

Congrats to Beckham on a line that is relevent, stylish and all around posh.

The Iconic Flasher

Thursday, 11 February, 2010

Way before pop-tarts and B-list celebrities were doing it, Marilyn Monroe was flashing her panties in public.

The iconic image of Monroe atop a subway gate that has inspired generations of men, Halloween costumes and tattoos is now being used for fashion inspiration.

Protec-Style Lingerie is producing Marilyn panty in beige, white and black.  The garments will be made of patented Mystex fabric that’s absorbent, stain resistant, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and antiviral.

Sounds more sterile than sexy.

Snooki: Before and After

Monday, 8 February, 2010

Inside Edition recently gave everyone’s favorite Jersey Girl a makeover.

The poof was deflated, the tan faded and the girls were covered up (almost).  Snooki says her new look made her feel like a “grandma,” but the toned-down (natural) approach actually revealed a pretty, petite lady.

Maybe there is life after the Jersey Shore…

The Vermin Collection

Friday, 29 January, 2010

To Reid Peppard, road kill is fashion.  Her London-based line RP/Encore uses taxidermy to turn perished critters into accessories like bracelet’s, broaches and hairpins.

Peppared found herself drawn to taxidermy while studying fine arts in London.  For her, combining skills as both artist and taxidermist was natural.  A vegetarian, Peppared, reminds objectors that no animals are hurt during her process.  They are all, “victims of road kill, pest control, or natural death.”

This, of course, doesn’t make it easy to look at.  To those offended by her collection of vermin, Peppard says, “So many people are unwilling to look inwards.  They are unable to see beyond what they see.”

I find it hard to look inward when the fashion is about innards.

The State of The First Lady

Thursday, 28 January, 2010

President Obama delivered his State of the Union Address last night amid great scrutiny and uncertainty.  What was certain, in fact, what has remained certain for his first year in office is First Lady Michelle Obama’s budding status as a fashion icon.

Last night Mrs. Obama wore a long-sleeved wine and plum colored dress by Isaac Mizrahi.  ABC News speculated that many of the evenings important attendees would wear shades of purple in an effort to suggest that bipartisanship (red + blue = purple) is the only way to heal an ailing nation.

Your T-shirt’s on Fire?

Tuesday, 19 January, 2010

Nashville foursome, Kings of Leon, is producing a line of high-end tees, denim and jackets for Surface2Air in (Paris) and S2A x KOL here in the US.  The price tag on a t-shirt is rumored around $100, denim will fetch close to $200 and for a mere $1150, you can wear a bomber jacket just like frontman Caleb Followill.

In times when even hipsters keep their wallet chains tightly clipped, just how much are we willing to pay to look like a rockstar?

Who wears short shorts?

Thursday, 20 August, 2009

Michelle Obama wears short shorts! Why? because its HOT! And so is the Grand Canyon!

So what’s all the fuss about? This historical first lady fashion statement captured obvious criticism that accompanies being in the public eye. Yet, as rightly deserved, the first lady has been offered the fashion seal of approval by over 13,000 people polled by the Huffington Post. The Results:

Michelle Obama has the right to bare legs and we could not agree more!

Save the Date: August 28th, 2009

Tuesday, 18 August, 2009

With unprecedented access, The September Issue, directed and produced by R.J. Cutler, tells the story of legendary Vogue editor in chief Anna Wintour and her larger-than-life team of editors creating the issue and ruling the world of fashion.

The September Issue won the Grand Jury Prize for Excellence in Cinematography at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival and will make its theatrical debut on August 28th, 2009

The September 2007 issue of Vogue magazine weighed nearly five pounds, and was the single largest issue of a magazine ever published. With ad sales now dropping at a record rate, is this the begining of Anna Wintours grand exit strategy?

Serena French, an NY Post fashion editor reports; Wintour, allowed Cutler an extraordinary level of access for the closing of the most important issue of the year in 2007, which at 840 pages was the magazine’s biggest ever. Cutler followed Wintour and her team from the shows in February — when fall clothes are shown on world stages — from planning with editors and photographers, fashion shoots, meetings with retailers and designers, to closing in July, interspersed with interviews at her homes in Greenwich Village and Long Island.

If this really is the end, or only just the begining, Anna Wintour will forever be regarded by the Fashion industry as nothing sort of a Legacy.

September Fashion Bibles are Being Reduced to Magazines

Tuesday, 18 August, 2009

For September, every major fashion magazine releases an Issue thick enough to be a Steven King Novel, but, that may be so last year. This years coveted September issue is expected to appear as skinny as the model on the cover.

In an attempt to save recession dollars, fashion marketers are turning to the web for a hopefully better place to spend their advertising budget. Already in effect, some September issues are showing up on the news stands, about a third slimmer than last year.

Ad pages in Vogue tumbled 36%, to 429. That’s a far cry from 2007, when Vogue trumpeted its September issue with a total of 840 pages.

As they spend less on magazine advertising, fashion marketers are testing lower cost and possibly more measurable outlets offered on the web. Included are YouTube, Twitter, DailyCandy.com and more to come. Re-allocating money to buy add space and on top web magazines may be money better spent now the people spend more time reading on the computer than out of magazine and newspapers.

Many designers resisted Internet marketing in the past, with the excuse that they could not properly display their product or message and that they would not be able to reach their real target audience. But with the times’a'changin technology can showcase almost anything on the computer as though you were looking at the real thing. We have Large High def screens on our desks that can watch beautiful video in real time.

WPP’s ad tracking firm TNS Media Intelligence reported that Louis Vuitton North America more than doubled its digital ad spending in 2008 to $286,000, from $107,000 in 2007, and Diane von Furstenberg boosted its Web spending from nothing to $43,000 last year. This data tracks spending on display ads but does not account for other types of digital ads, such as search and online video or the cost of creating a Web site.

Being online is now considered and investment, entire marketing campaigns are being launched digitally. Chanel used social media by posting a short film to YouTube, starring French actress Audrey Tautou, and promoted the video with search ads and other ads on the site.

To capture some of the dollars flowing to the Web, traditional magazine companies are introducing new features. The e-commerce initiative launching on Condé Nast’s Style.com in September lets users shop for trends they see on the runway. Net-A-Porter, Nine West, Neiman Marcus and New York & Co. all are advertising on the site at launch.
