Re-Fashion

Wednesday, 3 March, 2010

Though New York Fashion Week is history, there is still much to talk about.  Take for instance the buzz surrounding The Green Shows that featured sustainable and recycled clothing lines.

The Green Shows, sponsored by natural beauty line Weleda, opened this year with a Gary Harvey showcase.  Harvey’s recycled couture line feature gowns made of newspapers, laundry bags and re-worked baseball gear.

Harvey, who previously served as creative director for Dcokers Europe and Levi Strauss says, “Too many garments end up in landfill sites. They are deemed aesthetically redundant and get discarded at the end of the season when there are often years of wear left.”

While a newsprint dress may not be your style, encouraging sustainability in an industry that generates massive amounts of waste simply by its ever-changing nature is essential.

Buns are not just for ballerinas.

Good news: the bun is back!

Finally, a hair style we can all safely do in the privacy of our bathrooms.  And, what’s more, it’s the perfect fix for a bad hair day!

To achieve this look that’s all the rage in Hollywood, pull your hair into a high pony-tail, twist the hair from base to end and wrap it in circular motion around the base of the pony tail.  Secure with pins.  You can do your bun messy, sleek or braided.  Top it off with a headband.

Andre Leon Talley Confirms What You Already Knew…

Thursday, 25 February, 2010

Vogue Editor-at-large and fashion god, Andre Leon Tally is going on the record about up-and-coming designer LaQuan Smith.  You read about LaQuan on this blog as a fashion week breakout and now Leon Tally has given him the seal of approval.

Speaking of LaQuan, Tally says, “He showed 15 looks at New York Fashion Week for the first time this season and it was simply outstanding. His point of view was totally contemporary. He makes clothes for urban ladies. Lady Gaga and Rihanna have worn his leggings. He had the courage to go ahead and his father, a retired postal worker, gave him the wherewithal to pull that fabric together and turn it into magic. I went to that show and I saw magic. I can only hope that one day we’ll see our first lady wearing LaQuan Smith.”

Congrats, LaQuan, you have arrived!

Not Everyone Wants to Keep Up with the Kardashians

Tuesday, 23 February, 2010

Style guru Tim Gunn recently told MSN’s Wonder Wall  he doesn’t put a lot of stock in celebrity designers.

He had some particularly colorful things to say about the Kardashian’s line for BeBe stating, “I just think the Kardashians have an absence of taste and I don’t think that that should be perpetuated.”

Gunn, who is well respected in the industry, is good to remind us of the unfortunate fact that all it takes these days to launch a fashion line is 15 minutes of fame.

Who Wants to Smell Like Carrie Bradshaw?

Tuesday, 23 February, 2010

Sarah Jessica Parker was in NYC last week for a presentation of her newest scent, SJP NYC.  Just typing those six letters sends a thrill up this blogger/SATC fanatic’s spine, but what of the scent?

Says Parker, “What I really wanted to do was capture an image, a snapshot in my head of Carrie Bradshaw, that sort of freeze-frame of her of her walking down any New York City street at an idyllic time of year in a floral-print dress on her way to meet somebody or do something, or surrounded by her women friends.”   In other words, SJP NYC is a blend of wild strawberry, gardenia, and vanilla notes in a bottle custom designed by Oscar de la Renta to match the dress Parker wears in the ad campaign.

Smelling like Carrie Bradshaw may just be the perfect way to tide us over until SATC 2 (May 2010).

Olympic Fashion

Thursday, 18 February, 2010

For those of you thinking the Olympics is all about sports, I give you American figure skater Johnny Weir.  Known almost as much for his off-ice antics and unapologetic flamboyance as his skating, Weir has just announced that he’ll be starting his own fashion line and opening several retail stores.

Weir is featured in the Sundance Channel’s reality series Be Good Johnny Weir and has been co-designing his costumes with Stephanie Handler.  Handler tells WWD that Weir has a good understanding of the industry and is very involved in each detail of the design process.

While figure skating costumes and their sequins and feathers may not be the best indicator of an eye for fashion, Weir’s reputation for pushing boundaries and taking risks are two qualities found in some of our most iconic designers.

Oh, and for those of you interested in the sports, Weir turned in a fantastic short program on Tuesday night putting him in 6th place before the long program.  (Low scores if you want my honest opinion.)

Fall 2010 Spotlight: LaQuan Smith

Monday, 15 February, 2010
LaQuan Smith is not your typical Fashion Week designer.  He has no formal training and does all his pattern making, cutting and sewing in a bedroom of his grandparent’s home with the help of a mannequin named Ivanka.

At the tender age of 21, Smith is making his Fashion Week debut at a townhouse on the Upper East Side.  He’s hoping to entice editors and buyers away from the Bryant Park tents with his seashell shaped jackets, studded leggings and tank tops of lace and scuba fabric.

Smith’s just the kind of underdog the world likes to root for and with Rihanna and Lady Gaga already wearing his designs, it’s likely that this young designer will soon find himself in a real studio with a staff and an assistant.

Custo Barcelona Fall 2010

Monday, 15 February, 2010

Fur has made a rather surprising return to the runway for fall 2010.

Spanish label Custo Barcelona, debuted their fall 2010 line that was inspired by, “hairy metal.”  “Hairy metal” as it turns out, is mix of psychedelic print, woven sparkling strips and fur wrapped across the body.

This particular line of super short mini’s, leather hot pants and cropped fur jackets is adventurous even by Custo’s standards and left many wondering how it will translate for buyers and the Custo faithful.

Rebecca Minkoff Fall 2010

Friday, 12 February, 2010

Rebecca Minkoff presented her Paris inspired Fall 2010 collection in NYC this week.

The apparel collection consisted of street-chic little skirts, blazers, biker jackets and dresses.  Minkoff updated her famous Morning After bag in electric shades of red, purple and pink.  Hobo bags and clutches also made a strong showing in deep hues with metallic embellishments.

Makeup was simple and pretty.  The concept was to make it look like the models were just coming in from the cold with flushed cheeks, pink lips and lots of lashes.

The City’s Erin Lucas and Agyness Deyn were in attendance.

RIP Lee Alexander McQueen

Thursday, 11 February, 2010

In the the height of Fashion Week a gray cloud is over casted by the sudden death of top designer Lee Alexander McQueen. Below is a post from Alexander McQueen web site…

“ON BEHALF OF LEE MCQUEEN’S FAMILY, ALEXANDER MCQUEEN TODAY ANNOUNCES THE TRAGIC NEWS THAT LEE MCQUEEN, THE FOUNDER AND DESIGNER OF THE ALEXANDER MCQUEEN BRAND HAS BEEN FOUND DEAD AT HIS HOME. AT THIS STAGE IT IS INAPPROPRIATE TO COMMENT ON THIS TRAGIC NEWS BEYOND SAYING THAT WE ARE DEVASTATED AND ARE SHARING A SENSE OF SHOCK AND GRIEF WITH LEE’S FAMILY.
LEE’S FAMILY HAS ASKED FOR PRIVACY IN ORDER TO COME TO TERMS WITH THIS TERRIBLE NEWS AND WE HOPE THE MEDIA WILL RESPECT THIS.”

One of his most recent highlight was the design of the 10inch stilettos, which Lady Gag wore in the “Bad Romance” video.

The Color of Spring

Thursday, 11 February, 2010

Word on the fashion street is that this springs hottest nail color is a neutral hue somewhere between beige, brown and mauve. Glamour is calling it “smokey beige.” Discerning eyes may have caught it on spring 2010 runways and Sandra Bullock’s nails as she gripped her Golden Globe.

Chanel is taking credit for first producing the color (Chanel Particuliere), but I might suggest Avon’s Nailwear Pro in Nocturnal (something I’ve been wearing and recommending since early fall) as a more economic option ($5).

The color, regardless of what brand, is a nice transition from the dark polishes of fall and winter to the brighter colors we tend to see in spring.  It’s verstatile and just different enough to catch the eye.

Christian Audigier Takes it Down a Notch

Sunday, 7 February, 2010

The LA Times reports that Ed Hardy designer Christian Audigier will produce a line of simple, vintage t-shirts.  The tees will be printed in neutral and earth tones and be free of the logos, graphics and embellishments Audigier built an empire on.

The line will be launched at the Project Las Vegas trade show February 16.  In a news release Audigier likens the line to, “your favorite pair of jeans, you will want to live in these clothes.”

A website for the new collection will launch in March and 20 retail stores are in the works.  The first store is slated to open on Melrose Avenue later this month. The t-shirts are expected to retail for $32-$92.
