Naomi Campbell Hits the Runway for Haiti

Friday, 5 February, 2010

World famous super model Naomi Campbell has announced that she will organize a charity fashion show during New York Fashion Week to benefit the Haitian relief effort.  The show will pair top models and designers.

During an interview in Paris, Campbell said the response has been very positive and that the fashion world is ready to do their part.  Christy Turlington, Rachel Zoe and Marc Jacobs have signed on and Charlotte Ronson has reportedly offered up her time slot at Bryant Park for the event.  Campbell, who has retired from the runway, will walk in the event.

This is not the first time Campbell has done charitable work.  She organized similar shows with the group Fashion for Relief in Tanzania, Mumbai and in the US after Hurricane Katrina.

American Express cardholders can get tickets beginning today through Ticketmaster.

The Thong is So Wrong

Wednesday, 3 February, 2010

In this month’s Cosmo readers will find a eulogy to cheek-less undergarments.  Retailers report that sales for thongs and G-strings have dropped causing those who’ve long shunned anything responsible for a long-term wedgie rejoice.

Sarah Hepola of Salon.com, who has never surrendered to the thong, closely reports on the myth of the thong, by going to those who may know most about it: straight men.

While many praised the thong for its diminutive proportions, others pondered its very existence and the logistics of folding one.

The Size of Beauty

Tuesday, 2 February, 2010

The Girl Scouts of America and research firm Tru did an online poll of 1000 girls ages 13-17 and found that 9 in 10 of them felt pressure to be thin.  Three out of four girls are influenced by fashion, calling it, “really important.”

Kimberlee Salmond, senior research for the Girls Scout Research Institute, notes, “Teenage girls take cues about how they should look from models they see in fashion magazines and on TV and it is something that they struggle to reconcile with when they look at themselves in the mirror.”

The study also showed that teenage girls also take their body image cues from peers, friends and parents.

On a positive note, 80% of those polled said they would like to see more natural photos of models and models that look more “real-sized.”  In light of this, I give you (teenage girls, friends, parents, etc.) some beautiful REAL-sized women.

And the Grammy Goes To…

Monday, 1 February, 2010

The 52 Annual Grammy’s were held this past weekend and stars embraced the traditionally edgier red carpet.  Separating the good from the bad at the Grammy’s is a much trickier task than the tamer Hollywood shows, but here goes.

For Best Dressed, I’m going with Pink for not wearing pink.  Her tiered strapless haute couture gown in shades of white, gray, slate and black flattered her figure and polished off her tough demeanor.  With the attitude and occasional burst of florescent hair, it’s easy to forget this woman’s talent.

My runner up this year is Rihanna.  While still somewhat over-the-top, her white Elie Saab with structured hips and feathered turtle neck, was a pleasant departure from the leather she’s been fancying lately.  Her makeup was simple and spot on.  All in all, I thought she looked rather radiant.

My final pick is the incomparable Jennifer Hudson.  Looking svelte and ladylike in her structured Victoria Beckham with slick pony tail and bangs, Ms. Hudson did it right.  She played it safe in black, but the length, architectural pleats and cleavage were all very Grammy.

The State of The First Lady

Thursday, 28 January, 2010

President Obama delivered his State of the Union Address last night amid great scrutiny and uncertainty.  What was certain, in fact, what has remained certain for his first year in office is First Lady Michelle Obama’s budding status as a fashion icon.

Last night Mrs. Obama wore a long-sleeved wine and plum colored dress by Isaac Mizrahi.  ABC News speculated that many of the evenings important attendees would wear shades of purple in an effort to suggest that bipartisanship (red + blue = purple) is the only way to heal an ailing nation.

Mmm, you smell…hazardous?

Wednesday, 27 January, 2010

ABC News released the results of a study by Harper’s Bazaar warning that fake fragrances may contain hazardous active ingredients like antifreeze, bacteria and urine.

Valerie Salembier, VP and publisher of Harper’s Bazaar and her staff warn consumers that using these counterfeit fragrances may have serious implications on your health and offer the following tips when buying a fragrance:

-Designer fragrances are costly to make and distribute.  If the price is too good to be true, the product is too.

-Beware of internet re-selling.  If you’re trying something new, research the product in a department store (price, packaging, color) and compare it to what’s online before buying.

-A real fragrance is neatly packaged.  If the cellophane wrapping in your fragrance is sloppy or missing, or if the box is taped or over-glued, you might have a counterfeit.

-Look for the barcode: barcodes on fragrances are usually on the bottom of the box.  If the barcode is on the side or top, be suspicious.

-Examine the printing.  Look for inconsistencies in the text or color.

History by Dior

Tuesday, 26 January, 2010

Christian Dior revealed his Spring/Summer 2010 line on Monday unveiling a gorgeous world of fine tailoring, top hats and rose petals.  The line is rich in romantic browns, gold, pinks and mauves and reminiscent of a day when a good milliner was as crucial as a great pair of jeans.

Throughout his tenure at Dior, John Galliano has consistently presented these whimsical, fantastic shows that take the audience on a fairy tale journey of silk and lace.  He is at his best when creating a world of meticulously dressed aristocratic ladies.

Critics (yes, there are those so bold as to criticize Dior) have asked why Galliano refuses to let go of history and create some of his own.  But fashion, especially high fashion, is art.  It’s about form, not function and in a time when so much of the world is looking for a beautiful distraction, Galliano’s penchant for finding beauty in history is to be appreciated.

Jewels and Gems at the SAG Awards

Monday, 25 January, 2010

The stars came out for the Screen Actors Guild Awards this past weekend looking like gems and jewels.  All three of my best dressed wore stunning shades of gemstones and looked refreshingly regal.

My best dressed goes to Diane Kruger who took a color risk in her mustard yellow gown by Jason Wu. The unusual color, asymmetric cut and train set Kruger apart from her fellow actors and reminded us why she was cast as the most beautiful woman in the world.  In my humble opinion, it’s one of the best designed dresses in recent red carpet history.

Hot on the heels of my best dressed is Lea Michele of Glee who forgot the boring black poof dress of the Globes in favor of a stunning turquoise column dress by Catherine Malandrino.  The deep V may have gotten her sent home from prom, but solidified her status as up and coming red carpet stunner.  The color and playful ruffles next to her gorgeous flowing hair filled me with glee.

Proving that it’s not just the actors who bring the glamor and that there is fashion redemption during award season, 30 Rock’s Tina Fey pulled out all the stops in her deep purple, knee-length Ferragamo.  Attentino that was lacking at the Globe’s was clearly paid to Fey’s hair and accessories creating a smart sexy look.  Fellow writers rejoice!

Some Woww for your Monday…

Monday, 25 January, 2010

Jenni Farley, or JWoww to fans of MTV’s hit show The Jersey Shore, is designing a clothing line featuring her signature club top.   The line, which can be custom ordered to fit your body type, is being dubbed as a reinvention of “sexy sophistication.”

Due to a Pay Pal glitch on her site, the price for “sexy sophistication” is yet to be determined…

Do you find this man inFURiating?

Friday, 22 January, 2010

Kanye West and Amber Rose made an appearance at Paris Fashion Week donning floor-length fur coats.  Some are dubbing it “Yeti Chic” while others point out that wearing fur, which is fast becoming a no-no even among fashions most elite, may not be the best way to repair a still tarnished imaged (remember Taylor Swift?).

So what’s your take? Does the twosome leave you feeling warm and fuzzy or just plain FURious?

From Ugg to Oo…

Thursday, 21 January, 2010

The ever-present Ugg boot is about to get a makeover.

Ugg Australia will team up with iconic shoe brand Jimmy Choo to produce a collection of boots based on the traditional Ugg design, but with “details that embody the spirit of the Jimmy Choo brand.”   You can get yours for $595-$795 at select stores, online and at Jimmy Choo and Ugg Australia stores.

Golden Globes Fashion

Monday, 18 January, 2010

With a few exceptions, the ladies of TV outshone their movie counterparts at last night’s Golden Globe Awards.  Champagne, nudes and peachy-pinks made a strong showing, but tended to wash out their wearers and look rather unflattering when photographed.  As predicated by some insiders, several stars donned purple (with mixed results…).

My vote for best dressed goes to Anna Paquin and her jeweled Stella McCartney gown.  Paquin is usually thought of as girlie and cute, but this dress, paired with sleek, side swept hair, took her from damsel in distress to woman in charge.  The deep V in the front and the sparkle was the perfect kick-off to awards season.

Former model January Jones looked stunning in her black Lanvin with complimenting headband.  The architectural ruffle at the shoulder and waist kept the black dress from being anything but basic.  I’d say Jones has officially stepped out of the shadows not only in her role as Betty Draper, but on the red carpet as well.

Danger: curves ahead!  Christina Hendricks brought her signature va-va-voom to the carpet in a peach Christian Siriano gown.  This dress and color could’ve gone very wrong on a tiny frame or fair-skinned gal, but Hendricks, with that red hair and body reminiscent of old Hollywood screen icons, wore it with confidence.

I’d like to honor one movie star, not only for finally getting the recognition she deserved (Best Dramatic Actress for The Blind Side), but for finally hitting a fashion home run.  Sandra Bullock is seldom on anyone’s Best Dressed List; her choices tend to be off-color and ill-fitting, but last night’s purple Bottega Veneta gown with sheer corseted back and skirt matched the actress’ disposition and flattered her figure.  The dress, hair and jewelry were spot on.  Here’s hoping she keeps it up as the nominations will surely keep coming.

Other happenings worth noting: rain in LA, Meryl Streep’s red lips, Christina Aguilera’s perfectly cut bob, William Hurt’s grizzly beard, Julia Robert’s Indian inspired jewelry, Jennifer Aniston’s pelvis-high slit, Mike Tyson accepting a Golden Globe, Drew Barrymore mouthing, “I love you” to a certain MAC guy, numerous jabs at NBC and Jay Leno, Michelle Obama inspired guns on Jennifer Garner and Felicity Huffman, a moving, heartfelt acceptance speech from Monique, the unbelievably gorgeous Halle Berry, the show ended on time.

New Year Resolutions By Top Designers

Thursday, 31 December, 2009

Happy New Year! Do you have any New Year’s Resolutions? Alexander Wang, Erin Wasson, and other fashion designers do!

Alexander Wang (Alexander Wang): “Hmm I haven’t really made any new year’s resolutions – I find that its better to surprise myself than to have expectations I can’t keep. But I guess if I had to make one it would be to eat more organic… no junk food. Except for maybe pineapple buns!”

Erin Wasson (Erin Wasson x RVCA): “Next year, I’m definitely devoting myself to saving and adopting more animals. I will be on a crusade to do as much as I can. Yes, I can only imagine how crowded my house will be by 2010!”

Lisa Mayock (Vena Cava): “By the end of 2009, I’d like to learn enough Spanish to be able to chat comfortably with the dude who owns the bodega downstairs.”

Abigail Lorick (Lorick): “My New Year’s resolution is to get health insurance. And to be more selfless.”

Melissa Coker (Wren): “To spend more time at nice places like Griffith Park and the Huntington Library. And to eat more Omega-3s.”

Elizabeth Yarborough (Yarborough Jewelry): “I have made many, many resolutions for the new year. At the top of my list is reading, which has fallen by the wayside recently. In 2009, I resolve to shut out the world and read for at least an hour every day, starting in January with some stuffy English Lit.”

Wendy Mullin (Built by Wendy): “Go more places, stay longer.”
