Silly Bandz Bracelet Craze: School Ban Over Distraction
Posted: 5/27/2010 5:21:43 PM
|
The Bandz are now contraband. Schools in several states, including New York, Texas, Florida and Massachusetts, have blacklisted Silly Bandz, those stretchy, colorful bracelets that are creeping up the forearms of school kids across the U.S. And starting this week, all 800-some kids at my son's elementary school in Raleigh, N.C., were commanded to leave at home their collections of rubber band–like bracelets, which retail for about $5 per pack of 24. What could possibly be so insidious about a cheap silicone bracelet?
"It's a distraction," says Jill Wolborsky, a fourth-grade teacher at my son's school, who banned them from her classroom before the principal implemented a schoolwide ban. One student stole some confiscated Bandz from her desk, choosing them over the cash in her drawer.
Students fiddle with them during class and arrange swaps - trading, say, a bracelet with a mermaid for one with a dragon - when they should be concentrating on schoolwork, teachers say. Sometimes a trade goes bad - kids get buyer's remorse too - and hard feelings, maybe even scuffles, ensue.
That's what prompted Karen White, principal of Snow Rogers Elementary School in Gardendale, Ala., in October to become one of the first administrators to forbid students their Bandz. "We try not to limit their freedom of expression and what they wear, but when this became a problem, I knew we had to nip it in the bud pretty quickly," says White, who has since extended an olive branch in the form of monthly Silly Bandz days.

How to spot a fake designer bag
Posted: 5/19/2010 9:46:09 AM
|
There are so many fake designer bags out there now days and they are so easy to get your hands on that it seems everyone has themselves a genuine designer handbag. You would think they would be easy to spot and yes there are still quite a few that are, however there are also many that are very hard to pick out as fake. The quality of fakes has become extremely good but there are still tell tale signs that give them away.
Material and Hardware The bag will be made of high quality material and matched perfectly, on some items like the Louis Vuitton monogrammed bags there will be no bottom seams and the material will wrap all the way from front to back leaving the back side print upside down. The hardware will be heavy and made of a metal not painted plastic. It will also be stamped with the logo.
Logo Take a careful look at the logo. It should be centred on the bag. Look to see if any of the logo's have been cut off in a seam or fold, a genuine bag will never have a logo in a position where it is cut in half or missing anything. If a pocket is sewn on the bag look to see if the logo is identical and matched to the bag pattern underneath it. If it's not matching or a different colour, you've got a fake. Also be sure it is the right logo Chanel is CC not GG.
Presentation No genuine bag will come with plastic anywhere on it. There will never be plastic protecting the hardware or handles on a genuine bag. Only the fakes are wrapped like that. Also be sure the bags, boxes and dust bags they come with are the ones that the genuine stores use. Check online if you are unsure.
All these things can be used to determine if you have a fake or genuine designer bag no matter what the brand is. Also check with the main web page of your designer of choice and see if they have ever sold that type of bag in that color to be sure you're holding a genuine bag.
Lastly I would recommend you find a good forum or blog that you can ask questions on, and get feedback from other people who are also looking for or buying discount designer bags. There are some dedicated to discussing fake and genuine bags and also authentication sites. Jump online and check them out!

Glam Slam: Five Warm Weather Wardrobe Musts!
Posted: 4/28/2010 1:13:37 PM
|
We're heading into Summer, which means more time outdoors (yay!) with Memorial Day weekend shindigs, Summer BBQ's and poolside cocktail parties all on the agenda. Hey, wait, that means I need a whole new wardrobe, right? Ummm, maybe not.
If you are on a budget (and these days, most of us are) you can update your look with a few key pieces. I gave Designer Bradley Bayou, whose famous fans include Oprah, Megan Fox and Eva Mendes, the task of narrowing things down to five must-haves.
SUMMER DRESS
Feminine frilly dresses in pastels, floral prints or lace can be dressed up or down. Take your dress to work under a boyfriend blazer or out on the town in a pair of heels and glittery jewelry. Don't be afraid to be a little naughty and nice - pair your feminine dress with a biker jacket and bold jewelry for a little edge. Choose a dress silhouette that best suits your shape - the fun flirty nature of this garment can accentuate assets and hide many flaws. Make your Summer dress work with your body so you can be your fun and flirtiest!
SHORTS
A must have for every body shape. Wear them rolled up at the hem with a slouchy T-shirt and blazer on the weekend or dress them up in a luxe version for cocktails. They are a great way to show off legs and can be found in full flowing or cut close to the body. Pick a style that best suits your shape and have fun. Don't be afraid to pair it with a button down and jacket and wear them to work.
BOYFRIEND JACKET
It isn't going away! Get one and get it quick! You can wear this piece now, through the Summer and into the Fall. It is great over almost everything: shorts, dresses, jeans and leggings. As a layering piece it will hide a multitude of flaws - using a dark jacket over a lighter color will trim off a couple of pounds making you look longer and leaner. But make sure you pick a jacket that suits your body shape and defines your waist, you don't want to get lost in the jacket; that would have the opposite effect, making you look larger than you are. Your boyfriend jacket can be dressed up and taken out for cocktails with a little glam - pair it with a sexy top and some jewelry, to either find a boyfriend or impress the one you've got!
UNDERWEAR AS OUTERWEAR
Super sexy and fun! A camisole, tank or fitted blouse is a great piece for under your boyfriend jacket. These are layering pieces that will bring your wardrobe up to date. It is perfect for adding texture under a suit at work, but will fit right in with come cocktails. You can access this trend by just adding pieces edged in lace or knits with boned bra cups. If you are feeling too exposed feel free to play with chiffon and tulle as layering pieces.
WARM WEATHER ACCESSORIES
Layer accessories to bring daytime outfits into the evening and evening outfits into the office. As we play with sequins, satins, beading and underwear as outerwear... the line between day and evening fabrics and silhouettes is blurred; use this to your advantage. Dress up cottons and knits with bling. Use metals and plastics to down play what may be a more traditional garment. And don't be afraid of color - this season the brighter the better! Adding a pop of color will do wonders to beef up last year's wardrobe. Bangles, scarves and sandals are a definite must have. But don't forget - to use accessories that are appropriate for your shape and size. Larger ladies can wear larger pieces, while smaller frames need to utilize smaller accessories. 5 Things You Didn’t Know: Your Mom
Posted: 4/27/2010 6:23:25 PM
|
Today marks the 101st anniversary of the first Mother's Day, first celebrated quietly by a devoted West Virginia daughter all the way back in 1908. A lot has changed, but the spirit remains the same: Show our moms a little extra love. If that means reverting to mama's boy status, then so be it.
Oscar Wilde said that, "All women become like their mothers. That is their tragedy. No man does. That is his." It was a notion Wilde liked so much that he used it in two different works. We may take any number of cues from dads, but our moms cut us slack when we need it and they set a standard for us on how a woman ought to be treated.
In honor of the most influential women in our lives, this Mother's Day we present five things you didn't know about your mom.
1- Mother’s Day is recession proof
The first thing you didn't know about your mom is that she's good for the economy.
The National Retail Federation, which has a vested interest in seeing to it that Mother's Day is a success, estimates that U.S. consumers spend an average of about $140 on gifts for their moms that day. Phone companies are stoked too; on Mother's Day, moms are on the receiving end of over 122 million phone calls, more than any other day.
A business research firm estimates that between flowers, cards and gifts like massages and spa treatments, Americans alone will pump $4.2 billion into the retail economy. When you throw in jewelry and other gifts, holiday spending on your mom skyrockets to almost $16 billion.
2- Moms are starting later
The face of motherhood is changing. Women are waiting longer before having their first child (statistically, the average age of a new mom has gone up from 21 in 1970 to 25 today). Also, between 1940 and 1990 the number of unmarried moms consistently went up, increasing by a factor of six, but the most drastic rise occurred in the 1970s and 1980s (since 1990 the figure has leveled off).
In December 2006, the face of motherhood changed drastically when a Spanish woman, Maria del Carmen Bousada de Lara, claimed the Guinness Record for having given birth to twins by C-section just one week shy of her 67th birthday.
3- The founder of Mother’s Day was arrested for protesting Mother’s Day
Another thing you didn't know about your mom is that the woman who made this special day possible regretted it until the day she died.
West Virginians were the first in the Union to honor mothers on the second Sunday in May thanks to the pioneering efforts of state resident Anna Jarvis, who is credited with launching Mother's Day in 1908 after her own mom suggested the idea (history's first subtle Mother's Day guilt trip?). Jarvis' idea was to honor your mom with white carnations, symbolic of wholesome, motherly love.
At one point in the ensuing 40 years, Jarvis was allegedly so sickened by the commercialization that her own holiday had launched that she protested during a New York City Mother's Day celebration, and was arrested for disturbing the peace.
4- The mom “record” for most births is 27
The source material on this record is scant and dubious. The woman, an 18th century Russian peasant whom history can't even dignify with a first name (for example, the authors of the 2007 book Why Beautiful People Have More Daughters call her "Mrs. Vassilyev" while Marie Clay's Quadruplets and Higher Multiple Births drops the "Mrs") reputedly bore 69 kids from 27 births, including multiple twins, triplets and quadruplets. What makes this all the more dubious is the claim that virtually every child survived. Who knew obstetrics had reached its pinnacle on the poverty-stricken steppes of 18th century Russia?
Whatever the case, this is one “record” we think most modern moms - Octomom notwithstanding - will pass on trying to top.
5- New moms burn 120 hours annually changing diapers
The last thing you didn't know about your mom is how much time of her own life she has spent cleaning up after you - before you could do it for yourself, that is.
On average, a mom with young children might pass the equivalent of three 40-hour work weeks every year changing diapers. Not surprisingly, men are typically clocked changing diapers at a much faster clip—around 90 seconds or so. Women meanwhile take on average around two minutes. Are guys simply more efficient at this thankless task? Or is it more likely women take longer because they're doing a better job of it?
