Two models last night described the catalogue of bad practice in the fashion industry and the exploitation of young women that forced them to fight for the right to join Equity, the actors' union.
A campaign led by Victoria Keon-Cohen and Dunja Knezevic for better treatment within their profession persuaded the union to allow catwalk and photographic models to join its ranks for the first time.
They told Equity leaders that many models are pressured into having sex with clients, doing nude photoshoots even if they are underage and staying dangerously thin.
The mistreatment, exploitation and illegality they cite includes sexual harassment by clients and photographers ranging from 'lewd and suggestive comments' to groping and attempts to persuade models to sleep with them. They say girls are often too intimidated or embarrassed to complain and that some agencies, not their own, ignore models' concerns in order to maintain good relationships with important clients.
Drug-taking is commonplace in the industry, with some models, including those under 16, using cocaine and amphetamines to stay as thin as possible.
Keon-Cohen, 21, said: 'In our industry models lack even the simple right to a single break in a 12-hour day. If a model sprains her ankle jumping on a trampoline in high heels, her scalp bleeds from an allergic reaction, or she is photographed naked because the stylist spoke secretly with the photographer to undo her shirt at the exact moment the shot was taken, she has nowhere to go.'
Keon-Cohen, who is Australian, said that because of the globalisation of the industry in recent years 'the mass supply of models has increased so much that models have become disposable labour. Models know this and often don't complain about mistreatment by their agency, or even if a photographer sexually abuses them, because they fear they may be blacklisted in the industry.'

my cousin Nicole Dishuk (age 31... a newly graduated student with a
doctoral degree about to start her new career as a Doctor...) was flown
into a nearby hospital, because she passed out.. They found a blood clot

operate. By the time they removed the right half of her skull to relieve
the pressure on her brain, the clot had spread to her brain causing
severe damage. Since last Wednesday night, she was fighting for her
life. They induced her into a coma to stop the blood flow and then
operated 3 times. Finally, they said there was nothing left that they
could do. Multiple clots in the left side of her brain were found, the
swelling wouldn't stop and she was on the life support. She died at 4:30
that day. She leaves behind her husband, a 2-year old, Brandon and a
4-year old, Justin. The CAUSE of DEATH they found was a birth control
she was taking that allows you to only have your period 3 times a year.
Doctors said it interrupts life's menstrual cycle, and although it is
FDA approved... it shouldn't be. So to the women in my address book, I
ask you to boycott this product and deal with your periods once a month,
so you can live the rest of the months that life has in store for you.

Upon hearing the news of the passing of Senator Ted Kennedy this morning, President Barack Obama released this statement to share his condolences for the Kennedy family and remembers the man he defines as "the greatest United States Senator of our time".
He says:
"Michelle and I were heartbroken to learn this morning of the death of our dear friend, Senator Ted Kennedy. For five decades, virtually every major piece of legislation to advance the civil rights, health and economic well being of the American people bore his name and resulted from his efforts. I valued his wise counsel in the Senate, where, regardless of the swirl of events, he always had time for a new colleague. I cherished his confidence and momentous support in my race for the Presidency. And even as he waged a valiant struggle with a mortal illness, I've profited as President from his encouragement and wisdom.
An important chapter in our history has come to an end. Our country has lost a great leader, who picked up the torch of his fallen brothers and became the greatest United States Senator of our time. And the Kennedy family has lost their patriarch, a tower of strength and support through good times and bad.

So I got to watch this awesome movie last Sunday! In Nazi-occupied France during World War II, a group of Jewish-American soldiers known as "The Basterds" are chosen specifically to spread fear throughout the Third Reich by scalping and brutally killing Nazis. The Basterds soon cross paths with a French-Jewish teenage girl who runs a movie theater in Paris which is targeted by the soldiers. I give it 5 stars! You totally have to see it. Movie was about 2.5 hours long and it went super fast. If you like "Kill Bill" by Quentin Tarantino for sure will looove this movie too!

LOS ANGELES – The Los Angeles County coroner has ruled Michael Jackson's death a homicide, a law enforcement official told The Associated Press, a finding that makes it more likely criminal charges will be filed against the doctor who was with the pop star when he died.
The coroner determined a fatal combination of drugs was given to Jackson hours before he died June 25 in his rented Los Angeles mansion, according to the official who spoke on condition of anonymity because the findings have not been publicly released. Forensic tests found the powerful anesthetic propofol acted together with at least two sedatives to cause Jackson's death, the official said.

Ricky Martin is a father to twin boys born via a surrogate, his rep confirms.
"Last year, Ricky Martin became a proud father by the birth of twin sons," his rep says.
"The children, delivered via gestational surrogacy, are healthy and already under Ricky's full-time care," the rep said in a statement. Carter Smith/GQ Ryan Kwanten spent most of his time partially naked during season one of HBO's "True Blood" as Jason Stackhouse. The combat boots with henleys and button up with epilates with military skinny slacks. The belts as well a military issued style. No graphics. Skullys with Navy collar sweaters. I love this spread. It is my favorite of the year from GQ. This is a super sexy look that guys can pull off very easily. The color pallet is perfect. From white, olive, navy, heather grey, charcoal, tan and black. I don't need to see a guy in too many more. leave the bright colors to the lovely ladies.

According to WWD, Frida Giannini, Gucci’s creative director, collaborated with Mark Ronson on the design of Gucci Ronson sneakers for their new Gucci Icon-Temporary store. The temporary store is slated to open in six to eleven locations around the world, such as Art Basil Miami Beach, staying open for two or three weeks in each spot. The first stop will be Crosby Street in Soho on October 23rd, other spots will include London, Berlin, Paris, Hong Kong and Tokyo. There will be 18 exclusive sneaker styles, 16 for men and 2 for women. A new Gucci Ronson version will be introduced at every pop-up store of the locations. Icon-Temporary sneakers are priced from $500 to $1,400, and Gucci Ronson shoes, $500 to $600.
“I spent many, many years as an avid sneaker collector, so I wanted to make sure these Gucci shoes were truly special from an aesthetic and collectable point of view,” said Ronson, who produced a 12-inch vinyl record of limited edition tracks that will be given to customers who buy Gucci Ronson sneakers as a gift.
Something fishy seems to be going on at Harvard: The university is trying to be hip, possibly even chic. How else to explain Harvard's cameo on this week's episode of NYC Prep? And its new men's fashion line, Harvard Yard? And by fashion line, we don't mean maroon sweatshirts with crests on them. The university has inked a ten-year licensing deal with clothing manufacturer Wearwolf Group for a line of contemporary men's apparel. It's unclear if the line is part of the university's attempt to stop bleeding money. Harvard Yard — a lawn we imagine makes a nice resting ground for Harvard students to repair glasses, wipe down their pocket protectors, and memorize an extra few digits of pi — inspired the spring collection.
